UPDATED: APR 23, 2012 April 2011 Bottle. An old fashioned hop integrated British bottled strong ale. Low carbonation. Chewy malts - boiled sweets - barley sugar. Little in the way of hop aroma, but some well soaked bitterness well integrated in the malt provides a robust balance, and the dry bitterness lingers in the finish without being aggressive. There’s a fat edge to this which borders on greasy, but just holds back. It’s a decently made beer - just what you’d expect from a British brewer. It’s a little lifeless, and lacks freshness. There’s nothing here of genuine interest, and nothing that lifts it above the ordinary. The quality of the ingredients is acceptable rather than good. The sweetness that is initially pleasant can become a bit cloying, and it might have benefited from longer than 3 days active fermentation. OK, but not doing much, and some weaknesses overall. [2.6]
July 2011 Bottle. Malty, sweet and tasty with moderate integrated bitterness. Watery finish. A British bottled beer, but OK. I like it more on this visit. [3.2]
April, 2012 500ml bottle from Tesco. I agree with my first comments, but find that I am rather enjoying this even more on this visit than on the second. Rum and raisin flavours. A good warmth, but not aggressive. There is much to like about this. Smooth, toffee and vanilla flavours. Hmmmm. [3.4]

Gorgeous rosy, copper colour with only a thin film of off-white head. Aromas dwell more toward malt biscuits, golden syrup and roses (oddly enough). Sweet and leathery at first then mellows into stewed stonefruit, nectarines and glace orange peel. There’s bitterness, but not a mouthpuckering resiny bitterness. Tasty though and a very pleasant pint.
