650 ml bottle from the LCBO.

Appearance: Pours an opaque black with a finger of tan head that dissipates quickly. Leaves fairly thick dense lacing.

Aroma: Chocolate, coffee, burnt malt, dates, figs, nuts.

Flavours: Coffee, dark chocolate, mocha, burnt malt, molasses, oak, some tobacco notes, hints of rye, liquorice and rum.

Mouthfeel: Thick and smooth with light carbonation.

Overall: This one is a great Porter although I was expecting a bit more rum flavour. The mouthfeel was nice and thick with layers of aromas and flavours.

Rating #1068 - April 28, 2014 - #beerguychrisgeekbeer for #week16- $650mL bottle from CBI. Aroma is heavy roast malt, lots of vanilla, and spice - rum barrel character is omnipresent. Taste is mild bitterness, medium-heavy alcohol character. Really cool porter, which easily stands up with some of the bigger Imperial Stouts. Has a cool demerara sugar, molasses character that puts it in a class of its own. Obscene.

Bottle, Embrun LCBO. Pitch black, foamy tan head. Aroma of wood, booze, and almost a fusel alcohol character. Silky body, roast up front, gives way to huge alcohol kick and a ton of wood. Wow, that is an ear warmer. Subsequent sips and I am really enjoying the mix of a classic (albeit amped up) porter with some huge alcohol and wood notes. Roast comes through very well and finishes velvet like silky smooth on the tongue. Get past some of those fusel alcohol notes and this is a winner.

Very gritty flavour and strong smoky finish. Very boozy, soya sauce and molasses. Okay.

Aroma is fig, chocolate, espresso, roasted malts and slight rye notes. Taste is similar with sweet deep roasted malts with chocolate and toffee chewiness to it. Rich sweetness until the end and matched with a well balanced bitterness that isn’t too deep in character. The high alcohol % isnt really detectable. Appearance is a black body with a light brown head that retains fairly well.

pours very dark brown with a nice light beige head offering good retention and lacing. chocolate, roasted and not quite burnt caramel, chocolatey tobacco, coffee and cream, woody with its tannins, some sparse red fruitiness - mostly cherries, but also red grapes - surprising red wine character rather than rum; although coconut and vanilla make their way through in a nice blending fashion. light carbonation, medium body - oily and sticky - and probably a tad heavy for its labelled porter status, grassy and tannic finish. much enjoyed!

(bottle) black in colour with a light-beige head. aroma of brown sugar, yeast and banana, with a hint of sugar icing and some twigginess. flavour is mostly tobacco and earth, with a hint of brown sugar, some yeast and a light roasted-bitter finish. heavy-bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle - Dark roast with barrel and rum notes. Dark brown with a tan head. Some roast malts, big barrel and sweet rum notes. Nice and rum isn’t harsh or overpowering, although a touch of booze.
