On draught at the brewpub. Translucent Very Dark Brown, beige head. Nose is coffee, earthy. Flavour is powdery coffee, choc malt. Simple American-style, unhoppy brown leaning toward the robust side. Surprise of licorice on the finish.

Tap. Pours a clear brown body with a small wispy light brown head that fell to a thin film. The nose is showing a bit of buttery diacetyl with the lightest chocolate and coffee notes, just lightly nutty. The flavor is pretty light on the butter, but it is there. Decent slightly sweet caramel and nutty malt, finishes with a slight metallic twang. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, a little clingy and sticky with some caramel lingering. Soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty weak attempt here as well, a little too light in the malt department and a little boring.

Draft - Caramel and toasted malts. Almost jet brown with a light brown rich head. Roasted malts, nutty, molasses and some light prune notes. Very nice with a great body.

A very nice easy drinking beer, especially if you like dark beers. Heavy chocolate and coffee aromas. Pours a nice dark red - brown colour and has a very smooth if slightly sweet taste that has a variable length finish. Bitterness tends to come out right at the end of the finish.

Pours near black with reddish tinge in sun on patio of brewpub. Has an initial smokey aroma. Creamy texture. Average carbonation, even a little too lively. Finishes bitter and sour with ok balance. On tap at brewpub.

Growler from Canoe. Very dark reddish brown with thin beige head. Big roasty aroma of coffee and cocoa with hazelnut and a little dark fruit thrown in. Smoky sweetness tinged by soft (and late) hop bitterness. Fuller-bodied, flat but smooth. Good complexity, lively character. May be Canoe’s best.

Toasty and roasty almost leaning toward charred and earthy with a hint of chocolaye in there as well. Pours brown darker than normal with some haze and a tarnish head. Dry flavors of toast and roast charred malts, nifty notes earthy bitterness almost astringent but still smooth and drinlable. Nice brown.

Backlog - May 13, 2010. 660ml bottle shared by blankboy with me and garthicus. Deep clear ruby pour, average creamy/bubbly white head. Dry leafy aroma, with cocoa powder roast and dry bitterness added - no alcohol detected, which is nice. The taste is nutty and dry, with just a background bitterness, again it has no alcohol character to it. Think, slick and slightly astringent on the palate, weakly carbonated, with a quick, wispy dry finish. Clean, not syrupy - and that’s really all I look for in a brown ale now - no syrup!!
