Growler from Canoe. Very dark reddish brown with thin beige head. Big roasty aroma of coffee and cocoa with hazelnut and a little dark fruit thrown in. Smoky sweetness tinged by soft (and late) hop bitterness. Fuller-bodied, flat but smooth. Good complexity, lively character. May be Canoe’s best.

Toasty and roasty almost leaning toward charred and earthy with a hint of chocolaye in there as well. Pours brown darker than normal with some haze and a tarnish head. Dry flavors of toast and roast charred malts, nifty notes earthy bitterness almost astringent but still smooth and drinlable. Nice brown.

Backlog - May 13, 2010. 660ml bottle shared by blankboy with me and garthicus. Deep clear ruby pour, average creamy/bubbly white head. Dry leafy aroma, with cocoa powder roast and dry bitterness added - no alcohol detected, which is nice. The taste is nutty and dry, with just a background bitterness, again it has no alcohol character to it. Think, slick and slightly astringent on the palate, weakly carbonated, with a quick, wispy dry finish. Clean, not syrupy - and that’s really all I look for in a brown ale now - no syrup!!

Canoe Brewpub - Victoria BC
This was nice brown ale I felt it was too light for the style and was hoping for a little more with the dark malts coming off with flavor.

On draught at the brewpub in downtown Victoria, BC. Pours a dark reddish copper brew with a creamy beige head that has some nice retention and good lacing. Aroma of crystal crisp malt, some roasted nuts, a touch of coffee and tobacco. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonated with flavors of roasted dark malt, citrus zest, pipe tobacco, and a touch of coffee. Finish is semi-sweet at first and then a mild dry aftertaste. Overall this is one of the better beers I sampled at the brewpub as it has a nice balance of bitterness and malt flavors.
