4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 b3shine (211) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - APR 22, 2012
Brought by urbancaver to yesterday’s whale tasting (BIG thanks, Cam). Looks good; like a good geuze. Smells great; sour. Tastes like angels in my mouth! This is AMAZING! Mouthfeel is awesome too. My new vote for best beer I’ve ever had.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 LeopoldStoch (201) - Green, Ohio, USA - MAR 16, 2008
Bottled shared at the Cleveland tasting. Poured a very cloudy golden color with a hint of an off white head that receded rather quickly. Aroma is actually much sweeter than most cantillons...most likely from the cognac barrels. A very easy drinking gueuze with a nice full bodied and softly carbonated presence. A very solid gueuze that I enjoyed a whole lot. good stuff!
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BrianK (200) - Livingston, New Jersey, USA - JUN 9, 2008
Bottle at Spuyten Duyvil. Flavor of cognac followed by sourness. Very interesting. Not sure if I’m a fan or not, will have to revisit this one.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 aleph (192) - - APR 5, 2012
Bottle from Ølbutikken. Barnyard, citrus, grape, apple, all with a bit of oak but utterly lacking in "cognac" :) Smooth (almost too much so?), hazy. Overall, not an essential Cantillon, but it was fun.
3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 KAME (160) - California, USA - JUL 14, 2009
I was slightly disappointed in this one. The aroma was complex, with a bit of cognac and the typical Cantillon sour funk, but I just couldn’t get past the awkward wateriness that occurred mid-sip. The finish was lasting and acidic, but overall the flavors were less homogeneous than I would have liked.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 ggaughan (99) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, LUXEMBOURG - MAR 1, 2009
The beer poured a clear golden body with a slight white ring on the edge but no head to speak of.
The nose was trademark Cantillon, funky and tart. Very nice.
The taste in the beginning was tart, slightly medicinal along with a hot alcohol, cognac note. As the beer warmed, the citrus and cognac notes intensified and were really pleasing on the tongue. Overall this is a really solid and drinkable beer and another fine example of what Cantillon does.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 JackT (71) - Lansing, Michigan, USA - FEB 21, 2010
My notes from Max’s read as follows: Sour, funky, brett nose, accidic, honey, strong bret flavor, amazing!
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 sarro (66) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - JUN 11, 2011
Chilled 750 decanted without yeast or sediment and shared with friends. Pours a light gold with a thin white head. The nose is full of funk, raw fruit, wood and sweet grapes. The taste is acidic and funky as expected with a bit of sulfur too. Mouth feel is light with a medium carbonation to high carbonation, a dry finish and a warming finish in the throat--probably from the acidity. The finish includes waves of light fruit with brilliant tartness, subtle brandy, and woody vanilla. I did pick up some subtle vinous notes in the smell and taste, but the cognac clearly takes a backseat to all other characteristics of the Gueuze. With that said, it was still incredibly enjoyable.

Bottle from Beachwood BBQ, shared with my fellow Bruery Reserve Society Members nickd717, Nick3, and HopHead84 on the eve of the Initiation. Your health, gentlemen.
Cognac barrels, huh. Having never had cognac, 50N by 4E is my only point of reference. Cognac is apparently a puckering, lambic-like beverage with wild yeast byproducts. No wonder Cantillon decided to age one of their beers in these barrels.
Ah. Wikipedia tells me that cognac is made from distilled wine. But there isn’t much grape or spirit flavor here.
There are white peaches and pear skins, though. Plus the yellow woodsorrel present in most of Cantillon’s catalog. And like their other lambics, 50N by 4E is moderately carbonated, generous with its wood, and pleasantly rank. But what’s this in the finish, heat? In a lambic? Maybe some of that cognac rubbed off after all.
