mtoast (287), Carnegie, Pennsylvania, USA May 30, 2007 On handpump at Bruxellensis beer festival, 9/10/06. How I ended up here, I can’t even describe., let’s just say Jan at Cantillon goes above and beyond. So anyway... poured in my brandy new Bruxellensis tasting glass by someone who speaks English (yay says my ignorant, non French speaking self) and tells me this is a dry hopped Gueuze. I shudder with delight! Big huge earthy hoppy aroma that disintegrates into typical Cantillon funkiness. First taste brings upon an onslaught of green leafy bitterness that holds off the barnyard for a few seconds only to succumb to the sour side. So complex, so delightful. Sitting in the sun at a beer festival somewhere just south of Brussels, drinking this nectar and about to embark on a 6 day beer tour. I wanna go back.
DrHomolka (622), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 20, 2008 750 ml bottle. Pours pale golden color with a pretty darn big white head. Probably the biggest head with the best retention I’ve seen within this style. Aroma blasts with huge barnyard notes. A bunch of farmy goodness, overwhelming Brett, horsey, hay, cobweb. Also present is an intense phenolic character that is more reminiscent of Fantome than traditional Lambic, but it is a welcome addition. Huge complexity in the nose. Taste is brightly, intensely sour, nice acidity, bone dry. This is pretty damn amazing. I certainly can’t think of a Geueze I’ve had that is this good. Sometimes examples of this style kind of blend together and all taste the same albeit good. This one manages to hit all the classic notes but add an interesting twist. Remarkable. bhensonb (3109), Woodland, California, USA Oct 18, 2008 Bottle shared by Marcus. Color is orange tinged gold with a fine off-white head. Aroma is slightly citrus sour over mild light stone fruits. Near medium body with mild carbonation. Flavor is citrus, a bit sour like rind, and imaginable funk. A bit puckery. Finish is astringent and lightly fruity. After a long time it’s like grapefruit (flavor not hop). ManvsCity (25), Redmond, Washington, USA Oct 17, 2008 750 ml bottle from La Cave å Bulles, Paris. One of the smoother Cantillons, and maybe appeals due to the upped hops content. Citrusy nose, decent thick white head, sparkling to the tongue. Like a fine Champagne in taste, but without so much fizz. Pucker inducing sour. One of the best gueuzes, and even slightly experimental. marcus (1095), Sacramento, California, USA Oct 17, 2008 This light gold beer poured with a miniscule off-white head and a sour fruity aroma. The flavor is considerably more sour and citrusy than I expected since candi sugar was added for the refermentation. However, this is a fine gueuze that tastes suthentic even though it is unblended., austone (565), Turku; Pori, Finland Oct 9, 2008 Bottle from Plan b @ EBF. Hazy light golden, no head. Rose hip aroma, sweet mango and little mead. Baby food fruity flavor, mango and passion fruit, nice soft tartness, very easy to drink. Maybe not as crisp as I’d like, but very enjoyable fruity Gueuze.
