hiddenvariable (181), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 3, 2008 bottle, "vintage 2004", bottled in 2006, consumed march 2008. pours a hazy darkish peach color, with a medium white head that fizzes quickly to a film. the cantillon yeast smell just oozed off while it was poured, this is going to be good! smell is a complex combination of musty lemon, orange, grapefruit, oak, funk, apricot, white wine, and honey malt, all with a rather sharp acidic kick to it. taste is acidic white whine, lemon and orange, oak, and funk, but it doesn’t last too long, because a biting, pucker-inducing sourness kicks in and almost immediately assaults your tongue. there is a hint of sweetness there, and a lingering oaky peach citrus flavor sticks around after the sourness dissipates. thin and kind of watery mouthfeel, with virtually no carbonation, pretty light body. i still prefer the bubbliness of a gueuze to the thin palate of an unblended lambic, but there’s no denying that this is a tasty beverage. it’s a funky citrus assault, and is wholly enjoyable.

Aroma is musty, like a damp cellar filled with paper. Some wood. Initially sour, lemon, then the mouth is filled with a tart sweetness. Finishes musty, grapefruit reminiscent, and dry. Lambic isn’t my best style to critique, but I did enjoy this. CamdenD (557), Madrid, Spain Jul 20, 2008 Wow. 2005 12.7oz edition. Wonderful dank aroma and cloudy orange look. Tartness overwhelms. Light golden/copper color w/a slight, quickly diminishing head, looks like a glass of champagne. Light, sweet aroma. Had a very tart, acidic flavor to it, w/flavors of cherries, white grapes, grapefruit, lemon & bananas. This one was a bit much for me; glad I tried it to knock out this style, but I’m not sure I would drink it again. Maybe it would be better paired with the right food, although I’m not sure what. Ibrew2or3 (1613), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Jul 17, 2008 2005 vintage courtesy of Tony at his Oldsmar Tap House. Pours copper with thin white head. Big aroma of mustiness, sour cherry tartness, acidity, mild funk, a bit of rotting fruit and progressively funkier on a deeper draw. The taste has a brief moment of fruity sweetness before the tartness wells up with initial notes of un ripe cherries, lemon juice, lemon peel and grapefruit. It slowly becomes mildly funky replacing just a bit of the tartness and starting to head in the direction of ‘balance’. Ends dry and wanting another sip.
This vintage could use a couple more years of age. Douglass88 shared a bit of the 2004 vintage with me last month and I enjoyed its milder tartness, smoothness and increased funky dusty complexity. Aubrey (2554), Denver, Colorado, USA Jul 14, 2008 Hazy orange with a fluffy head that faded fast. Very bold nose could be smelled from feet away. Light, soft texture. Zingy yeast flavors. Other elements of salt, cat urine, apple cider and vinegar. Slightly sticky finish. Decent overall, but it didn’t seem to have the depth I sought.
