I have had this countless times over the years. Recently, had a relatively fresh bottle in a blind tasting. It was my hit of the evening at 4.1. I liked more than the LP Kriek or 3F Intense Red. Wasn’t as aggressive sourness as I remember or expected. Blind tastings are the best.

bottle 37,5cl from brasserie Cantillon, @ home. Nice red color, white foam. Nice aroma of krieken that you find in the taste, with a good balance between bitterness, sourness and acidity. Not my prefered kind of beer but I must admit this one is very well done.

Bottle. Pours bright, clear red with pink head. Aroma is very brett, wild yeast, cherry, estery. Taste is very wild yeast, a bit of cherry, light bodied, medium carbonation. Overall, good.

Aroma of tart cherry, tart fruit, barnyard funk, vinegar, oak. Flavour is incredibly intense sourness with an equally remarkable dry finish. Drinking this Kriek was like an epiphany.

After the 10-year old De Cam Oude Kriek, I was lucky enough to discover another forgotten bottle in my cellar: Cantillon Kriek, at 9 years of age. Pours a lighter red than the De Cam, more an orangey hued red, but equally warm and beautiful and perfectly clear at first but brownish and fully cloudy with deposit, with very little fizz remaining after all those years. Head formation is rather limited: some gentle forcing leads to a very pale beige, loose, milky, ’old beer’ head which nevertheless retains quite well; and we all know that head retention is naturally limited in this style of beer, and in this style of beer we don’t care about that, do we... Aroma is more lambic-oriented and a bit less fruit-oriented than the De Cam, but of similar complexity and even a bit more ’fresh’ and crisp, revealing all kinds of impressions: sour cherries of course, raspberry vinegar, hay, dry sherry, Rioja wine, strawberries, wood, vanilla-like tannins, musty cellar, wet leather, mango, passion fruit, damp cloth, very old port wine. The mouth is immediately dried and cleansed with a sharp, typical Cantillon-like lemony and vinegary acidity, delicate and fresh but still very assertive, spritzy, with some of the champenoise fizz remaining and finely tingling on the tongue; rounded, still crisp fruitiness, sour cherries, lime juice, redcurrant, after which the wheatiness appears along with a more subdued, lactic acidity as of sour cream or yoghurt, though it is the citrus and vinegar acidity which keeps dominating the palate; Brett ’leatheriness’ and stone fruit woodiness further dry the back of the mouth and the throat, a vague leafy hoppiness for sheer structural balance is noticeable and the fruit sourness lasts for a very long time. Complex, elegant, sharp and feisty, fascinating: this has all of the noble qualities lambic afficionados associate with Cantillon. It has retained its crispiness and vivacity almost perfectly after 9 years of ageing. Another delight from the old lambic family, perfectly fit for a sunny autumn afternoon. Very appetizing too: this type of beer is probably the best apéritif we have in beer culture. Highly recommended - if you’re not afraid of the tartness and funkiness of a (very) genuine lambic, of course.

Glass at brewery. White bubbly head, dark red color. Aroma is cherries with a meaty sting. Taste is matured cherries and quite heavy.
