4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 Doodler (272) - Denver, Colorado, USA - OCT 15, 2010
750 Bottle at Jason’s CO sour tasting. Big thanks to Logan for breaking this rarity out. Poured into my Cantillon glass. Pours hazy orange with just a hint of carbonation. Nice lacing still all over. Crazy musky aroma, with notes of wood and earth/minerals. Beautiful citrus flavor with the tell-tale horse blanket and leather flavors of a wonderfully aged lambic. Dry finish. Overall - my favorite of the tasting and now, from Cantillon. Saludos!

Drank next to the 98 classic gueuze amongst many other. pour is a deep golden amber, mostly opaque with tons of pure white creamy head. the nose has a nice funk to it up front, rubbyer plastic and musky cellar notes are subtle. Strong peach notes, grapefruit, and the evidence of sourness in the nose. The taste is even better, brighter peaches and a more dusty funk with a great level of sourness in back. light body, creamy feel, soft palate, low carbonation in a good way and dry finish. the fruity flavors are extremely bright and the dry funk is integrated so well with a great drinkable sourness.

Bottle@Plan B, Copenhagen. Classic Cantillon sourness, but it does feel a little less sour and a bit more approachable. An easy drinking Cantillon, with farmyardy characters and citrus rind. Loved every second of it. Yum.

[1998] Glass poured by mr. Van Roy himself at the brewery. More soft and rounded than normal Cantillon Gueuze. Even more complex than the normal. Very pleasant.

1998 bottle sampled at Cantillon Open Brewing Day March 2004, thanks to Jean-Pierre Van Roy who turned up at our table unannounced with a dusty bottle of unspecified origin. Slightly hazy amber with a moderate white head and a delicate spritzy fine condition. Big juicy fruit, sour and leathery aromas. Quite full and well rounded, smooth and citric with complex funky barnyard notes in the mouth and a long dry chalky finish with hints of decay in the finish.

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2007 Pours a hazy yellow hue with a small light head. Aromas of grains, yeasty funk, citrus and that barnyrd goodness. Flavors of the same with a wonderful to it. Aged gracefully and thank you Dr. Bill for sharing.

UPDATED: FEB 13, 2005 Vintage 1998. According to the beer guy at Super Saver in Somerville, NJ, only 180 bottles were imported into the US. Poured a cloudy yellow/golden color with an averaged sized white head. Aromas and tastes of wood (oak), citrus, earth, apples and sourness. Nice lighter sour, tart, and puckering aftertaste (not overpowering). If all gueze tastes like this, I’ll drink it every day.

Like Dickinson, I stumbled across this phenominal brew at the Maproom. Hazy deep autumn gold pour with a medium cap of bubbly white head. Phenominal nose... deep, rustic, funky sour barn, moldy, well-aged cheese, tart lemons, cedar, and vinegar... almost tart enough to burn through the nose hairs. Sour, puckering lemon at the forefront... not really letting its guard down the whole way... cobwebby yeast gave way to old horseblanket, cheese, and wet cedar. So much going on with no perceptible faults. Powerfully tart, sour, funky, and engaging... enjoyed every second of the stomach erosion! Refreshing.

25 oz bottle, bottled 1998, via hopdog. Pours a hazy orangish gold body with a small fizzy white head. Not really any visible carbonation, but you can tell from the pour that this is not completely still. Big funky cheesy and cobweb funkiness with hay and grassiness, pixie stick like sweetness, and a grapefruity tartness on the nose. Bracingly acidic at first, but as you drink you get accustomed to it letting the wonderful dusty cobweb cellar funkiness shine through. Little bit of cork, wood, and sour cheesey flavors. Bone dry on the finish. Tight puckering mouthfeel with very fine slightly prickly carbonation. Much more active than I was expecting. This was just great. 10 years old and still amazing.

Bottle 75 cl. Vintage 1998 [Courtesy of Hildigöltur, thanks buddy] Large thick creamy white head that really lasted. Amazing for a Gueuze! Good display of lacework as well. Cloudy to hazy golden color. Aroma was extremely complex with notes of perfume, fresh apple, vinegar, milky acidic, hors blanket, wild yeasty notes. Over the palate came citrus, wheat, sour fruity notes as well. Full bodied with a soft carbonation and very smooth dry texture. Moderated acidic flavor with good counter sweetness. This was a quit unique experience as Gueuze normally is very carbonated, but this vintage came out very smooth. Sour dry fruity finish that lingers. Excellent and what a surprise Jacob!
