Commercial Description:
The Lou Pepe Gueuze is a blend of three different 2-year-old lambics. The standard Cantillon Gueuze is a blend of 1,2, and 3-year-olds. The inclusion of the younger lambic (which still has some unfermented sugars in it) sparks a refermentation in the bottle that gives Gueuze its famous champagne-like spritziness. The simple idea behind the special Lou Pepe blend is that it should have much more of the taste of old lambic, which is of course much harder, drier, more sour, and more complex than the young stuff. (Though 3-year-olds are generally more complex than 2-year-olds, it's not necessarily so; the 2-year-olds used in this instance have as much character as most 3-year-olds.) This being Gueuze, it has to be spritzy, so the brewery opted for the same method used in conditioning champagne: everyday refined sugar is dissolved in water and added to cause a refermentation. The sugar ferments out completely, so there is no residual sweetness, which Jean-Pierre famously detests.

This beer looks nice: pretty, clear, orange-copper-colored, with a lush head that eventually fades down to a small lacing. The aroma is terrily stinky: a great indication of a lambic - smells cheesy and musty. The flavor is much milder than I exected, and I really wish I had cheese with this one. It is really very tasty: slightly malty and sweet, pungent and tart, with hints of peaches or apricots. Nice.

I wanted something special for Thanksgiving, and this beer is not disappointing me (not as great as the LP Kriek, but I don’t think much can be ) - clear straw color, with large, but quickly fading head - very funky, barnyardy aroma, that one of my family members (not a beer drinker, obviously) just described as smelling "like a skunk" - oh well, more for me - surprising initial hop flavor up front, but this fades very fast, making way for a very mellow sourness (strange for this brewer) - very strong oak flavor, with a hint of vanilla that gives the beer a slight whiskey character (but it is very gentle) - wheat (and other grains) and horseblanket/earthiness on the back end - I’ve never had a beer with such a strong oak presence that wasn’t overpoweringly woody - I wonder how they do it - quite approachable for a Cantillon, but delicious none-the-less.

(Bottle 75 cl) Slightly hazy, deep golden with no head whatsover. Distinct - yet mellow - acidic aroma with notes of horse blanket and all that. Fairly light in body, vaguely sourt with Brett accents. One of the more smooth and accessible gueuzes. 281006

(2003)Slightly hazy yellow/orange with a tiny head. Fruit, vinegar, grass, citrus and yeast. Nice balance and a perfect, full bodied beer at the moment.

Bottle says 2000 - Cork says 2002. Pours bright gold into a tumbler. Fluffy bright white micro head slowly recedes and leaves clumpy lacing. Crisp, sour barnyard funk. Sharp cheese with lasting sour yogurt finish.

Bottled at Horsens Beerfestival. Clear, golden with almost no head. Mould, barnyard and citrus in the aroma. The flavor has mould, sourness, yeast and unripe-green apples. Thin body and astringent. Quite nice. (061028)

2002 bottle. Beer 33. Horse blanket, yay! Not as funky in the flavor, but still quite complex and crazy. A very nice gueuze.
