Commercial Description:
The Lou Pepe Gueuze is a blend of three different 2-year-old lambics. The standard Cantillon Gueuze is a blend of 1,2, and 3-year-olds. The inclusion of the younger lambic (which still has some unfermented sugars in it) sparks a refermentation in the bottle that gives Gueuze its famous champagne-like spritziness. The simple idea behind the special Lou Pepe blend is that it should have much more of the taste of old lambic, which is of course much harder, drier, more sour, and more complex than the young stuff. (Though 3-year-olds are generally more complex than 2-year-olds, it's not necessarily so; the 2-year-olds used in this instance have as much character as most 3-year-olds.) This being Gueuze, it has to be spritzy, so the brewery opted for the same method used in conditioning champagne: everyday refined sugar is dissolved in water and added to cause a refermentation. The sugar ferments out completely, so there is no residual sweetness, which Jean-Pierre famously detests.

1000. Pours a darker golden orange color with a white head. Aroma is sour with some light horseblanket, some oak, lemon, and some other barnyard aromas. Flavor is horse blanket and barnyard at first, then it gets some of the sourness. Finishes with some lemon and oak. Nice flavors throughout and is a very complex brew. Well done and well worth my 1000th.

The reason that I haven’t rated this otherwise great gueuze higher is that it had a nagging hint of something, which was too old. It wasn’t undrinkable by any means, but something was slightly wrong. Apart from that it was very acidic and with a taste with hint of wood. Wonderful beer with a snake in paradise.

2006 bottle purchased at Green’s on Ponce De Leon. 2006 version of this beer. Nice bright/haze orange color. The head isn’t easily produced. Originally, I thought the beer was not carbonated. Charred wood, cheese, fruit, and some sour/tart aromas coming through. Not as nuanced as other Gueuzes that I have had, in terms of aroma. Fruit is sharp/astringent citrus. Whoa, sour/funk dryness coming through in the flavor. A nice blended brew. I shouldn’t have smoked a pipe before this. Charred wood and funk are dominating. I hate to say it, but this beer doesn’t have too many dimensions, as I was expecting it to have. A nice Gueuze, but I i wish it had more depth, and for $20 this should be expected. I will say that this beer is saved simply by its uses of sour notes.

02 Vintage Bottle. Golden orange pour with white head. Aroma is very tart, lambic has gotten better with time. Very sour tinge. Nice.

Vintage 2006, shared with Andrew Bman1113VR Appearance: Pours a murky yellow with an orange hue. No head and no visible carbonation. Aroma: Mildewy books, must and funk. Taste: Wood barrel, sour funk, and pencil. Mouthfeel: Watery and low carbonation. Overall: This beer was big on funk but light on sour. I could tell it was well blended, balanced, but I was looking for a bit more sour that what I was hoping for. This beer is a conversation piece, not something you would even have with a meal or as a drink to take the edge off a long day.

2006 vintage. Hazy golden body with a fading white head. Aged, attic, barnyard, lemon, wood and a slight sweet. Florals even more as it opens. Taste is strong attic, spiderweb, congac, medium sourness, floral. Light bubbles. Good, aged, lambic, but not awesome!

Vintage 2003. Bottled in 2005. Golden orange with quite a big off-white head with good retention. Good lacings as well. Nicely edgy but very well composed funky smell. Notes of clean bretty aromas, horse blanket, aged cheese and mud. Grass and mild tart fruit notes. Lemon juice and perhaps a faint hint of mint. In the mouth, a quick acidic punch is followed by a massive funky brett character. Pleasant citric notes, grass and apple rind. Lots of barnyard and horse blanket and hints of aged cheese. After a while in the glass, the funkiness dominates almost completely. Gently husky wheat character. The finish is nicely dry with a considerable grassy bitterness, a hint of stomach acid, funk and minerals. Medium body with very tingly carbonation. Refreshing and very easy to drink. A really good one. A complex and very funky gueuze. Not very acidic considering the brewery behind it. It’s actually almost too easy to drink - it seems like it looses character after a while, as if the acidity mellows out. Serving type: bottle (Copy of old Beer Advocate review)

Bottle @ Ebenezer’s. Clear dark gold pour with minimal bubbly head. Aroma has tons of funk, wood, lemon, hay, and other barnyard notes. Also some nectar fruit, like peach and apricot. Flavor is excellent; great dark funk character, and excellent oak notes. The lemon bitterness is rude, but welcomed, and overall this is a beautifully balanced gueuze. Palate is bone dry; lovely mouthfeel. Great brew from Cantillon yet again.
