COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fresh sour cherries (krieken) in two year old Lambiek. We use approximately 300 gr cherries for 1 liter Kriek. The second fermentation in the bottle is obtained through addition of a liqueur, made with beer and saccharose.

May 12th, 2013 - Joining our celebrity line up of beers for an eminent tasting event is a thoroughly aged, well bred Lou Pepe from the year 2001. While the world was leaving behind the 90’s, Cantillon was hard at work putting this together. I knew that some age would tone down the sourness, but I think maybe the Lou Pepe went just a little too far, taking 12 years to get here, and losing some of its fang and claw. The first clue comes in the nose, where it smells a bit like chlorine, or a pool freshly treated. There’s a touch of sulfur too, and maybe even baby powder. It’s clean and sanitary smelling, but unexpected from a beer. The palate is still alive and well. Carbonation gives the Lou Pepe some life, activating the thin layer of flavor that seems to be left after much of it has faded away over time. What remains is a clear, pure taste of light watermelon, apple skins, and an acidic splash. The overall impression is a highly sophisticated carbonated beverage, which suggests that this is either an ephemeral beer, or the ravages of time took too much and gave back too little. Still, it is a landmark moment, and I am happy to have given this legendary brew a try.

On tap at the Birre Sotto l'Albero festival in Rome-ITALY (Macche and Bir&Fud). Pours an amazing red/rose cloudy color, medium tick rose color foamy head. Nose: mild acetic feel, vinegar. Mouth: light, refreshing, dry, thirst quenching. Cherries and red fruits. Great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Well, I was quite disappointed with this one, I am a big fan of the classic version of the Cantillon Kriek, which is I think is the ultimate cherry lambic... The Lou Pepe was not as great as I expected it to be. The nose was quite flat, less aromas than the classic kriek, the taste is also more sour, less balanced. I am thinking I might have bought a bad bottle because also there was a strong cork smell... I will give it another go.

2007 Sticker @ post-GABF party. Very sour, very cherry, very, very good. I’ll be chasing that dragon again for a long time... well, at least until the 2011 bottle matures.

Bottle 2007 sticker bottled September 04 2009. I purchased this off the shelf 5 years ago back when you could just buy them. Pour has a rich red color and a fat one finger pink head that held very well. Aroma has mild cherry, light acidity, some fruit skin, funky touches, and a fair bit of jam for a beer aged this long. Mouth feel is medium and carbonation plenty strong. Flavor is where the cherry starts to pop, nice dry acidity, mild funk, cherry skins, dryness from the barrels, and a lingering jammy finish. This has aged better than I would have hoped for and is a fantastic treat.

Mouthfeel is great with a medium light body and crisp carbonation. Taste is dry sweetness followed by a tart following that extends through the finish. Overall this is a great brew.
