Commercial Description:
"It has the colour of onion skin", said a voice behind me. It was Raymond Coumans. He was admiring the colour of the raspberry lambic reflecting in the red copper of the buckets used to empty the barrels. At that time (1986), "Raspberry-Lambic" already was synonymous with a sweet, artificially flavoured beer. This is why we decided to distinguish our beer from the other raspberry beers. Raymond proposed to call it a rosé, dedicated not to Bacchus but to Gambrinus.

The process to make this beer is identical to the one to make Kriek. When young, the Rosé de Gambrinus will still present its full fruity taste. Later on, the lambic taste will become dominant at the expense of the fruit taste.

Bottle (2008). Pours a dark pink with a medium light pink head. OK lacing around the glass. Aroma of sour raspberries and vinegar. The flavour is true Cantillon with vinegar like acidity and raspberry touch. Dry and sour finish. Bottle is young and would like to sample this again after some years in the cellar.

750ml bottle 2006 vintage. nice light pink-orange color, interesting. Smells slightly funky, hay, subtle. The flavor is more fruity lambic, sour and only once did I distinctly taste raspberry but it was like I bit into one. Other than that the raspberries were muted into a general fruitiness. I’d be interested in getting a fresher bottle to compare but I was not disappointed in this beer. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-24-2008 06:00:42

12 oz bottle into flute, served at cellar temp 50F. 2007 vintage (noted on cork, which was still fresh looking and unstained). Truly beautiful color -- slightly hazy pinkish/orangish/reddish -- with collapsing white fizzy head. Very pungent aroma tat fills the room upon opening. Nose: tart cherry skins, sour apple, fresh sweet raspberries that go well with the sour character (a sweetness that is in no way artifical, as the story in the "Commercial description" implies), and a trace amount of funk. Flavor is WOW! Certainly the direst, mouth-puckering, tartest lambic I have had to date. Starts of with a champagne like gueuze backbone accented by a tart raspberry flavor (all raspberries, no apple or cherries in the flavor, and no sweetness), that leads to an abrupt and superbly dry finish that leaves my mouth as dry as the Sahara. The palate is on par with the style - light and fizzy - but I prefer a flatter body (more akin to the unblended lambics), which accounts for the 3 instead of 4 or 5 rating I gave it for Palate. Overall: Cantillon kicks ass again! All their beers are so unique yet drawn together with a uniformity that I can’t wuite put my finger on. This stuff is brilliant and certainly not for the faint of heart. If you like it in your face, dry, and unique, seek out RdG!! P.S. this beer has one of the greatest labels of all times!

375ml Bottle: Aroma of sour raspberries. Poured pink/grapefruit juice in color with a medium-sized, rocky, fizzy, white and pink head that diminished but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Very sparkling. Full of small and large particles throughout. Flavor is heavily sour. Tastes of sour raspberries. Light to medium body. Tingly texture. Lively carbonation. Tart raspberry finish.

2008 Bottle. Seems a bit young. Pours with a pinkish head and a red body that is on the clear side of things. Good lacing. Aroma is raspberry seeds, light funk and a woody note. Taste is sour, but not strongly so, a bit watery with light raspberry flavor. Needs some more time on it. Seems unfinished. Lively, dry and puckering mouthfeel.
