Commercial Description:
"It has the colour of onion skin", said a voice behind me. It was Raymond Coumans. He was admiring the colour of the raspberry lambic reflecting in the red copper of the buckets used to empty the barrels. At that time (1986), "Raspberry-Lambic" already was synonymous with a sweet, artificially flavoured beer. This is why we decided to distinguish our beer from the other raspberry beers. Raymond proposed to call it a rosé, dedicated not to Bacchus but to Gambrinus.

The process to make this beer is identical to the one to make Kriek. When young, the Rosé de Gambrinus will still present its full fruity taste. Later on, the lambic taste will become dominant at the expense of the fruit taste.

2006 bottle. Pours red to pink, but definitely damn near close to a rose. Slight insignificant white-ring-around-the-glass of a head. Dry dry tart salty lactobacillus with a tinge of raspberry. REALLY dry. A bit minerally. Also smells a bit like E. coli on an agar plate, though not terribly. A bit thin on the palate, the acidity making a slippery sort of wateriness. This isn’t unpleasant, I can’t imagine it being more appropriate, but it doesn’t make the want the beer more. The flavor is ridiculously off the wall. Sharp tartness. So dry, it makes my mouth water. The strong salty lactobacillis, with the straw sort of barnyard character comes hard and strong. The raspberry really shows up in a strong bite at the end. A real subtle lingering. This leaves my lips salty. This is tangy and sharper than the kriek, and just lovely really. Very thirst quenching, I could drink this all night if it weren’t quite so puckering (like lemon juice!).

750ml. Lovely beer from one of my favorite brewers. Distinctive in its funky, musty character while still delivering a fresh rasberrry punch and refreshing sourness.

Bottle, Picked up at Noel Cuviers, Abel, West Flanders Belgium, Late June 07 Poured raspberry red with great pink head. Aroma had some raspberry there but quite sour and a bit musty and woody. Flavours were acidic, sour but not as sour as expected, a hint of raspberry, and very dry.

Wow...my quest for sour beer has reached a new pinnacle. This was the most sour beer I’ve rated yet! Aroma of sour raspberries and a little vinegar. Pour was a medium to dark brown with a frothy white head. Taste was extremely sour with with just a tad of raspberry...very faint. Mostly the sourness consumed my mouth and that’s how I like it! Awesome!

I was fortunate enough to have this on draft at Monks in Philadelphia. This is one of the better lambics I’ve had. It had a tart raspberry taste with some subtle earthy flavors.

More aggressive than many framboise I have had. Not such a good tool for getting into bed with girls as many framboise are, but ultimately more rewarding flavourwise.

750ml, 2007. Cranberry red color with a thin pinkish-white head. Sour, yeasty, tart aroma. Cherries, and other tart berries are very apparent. Fresh and bubbly. Sour and simple. Very fresh. I like it, but it’s hot out today and it works. Not their best, but drinkable and refreshing. Rerate, 750ml, 2008. I have a little more experience with lambics now. Aroma is well balanced and super tart. Green hay and lightly effervescent in the nose. So tart with just enough berries. Dry astringent finish. Sweet tart and preserved lemon. So much better than I remembered.

Sampled at the 1st annual Stone Sour Festival 2007. Nose of roses, and tastes of similiar. Very refreshing.
