Commercial Description:
"It has the colour of onion skin", said a voice behind me. It was Raymond Coumans. He was admiring the colour of the raspberry lambic reflecting in the red copper of the buckets used to empty the barrels. At that time (1986), "Raspberry-Lambic" already was synonymous with a sweet, artificially flavoured beer. This is why we decided to distinguish our beer from the other raspberry beers. Raymond proposed to call it a rosé, dedicated not to Bacchus but to Gambrinus.

The process to make this beer is identical to the one to make Kriek. When young, the Rosé de Gambrinus will still present its full fruity taste. Later on, the lambic taste will become dominant at the expense of the fruit taste.

37.5 cl bottle, 2002. Orange with pink notes. Tiny bubbles forming the modest head. Small particles present. Still strong raspberry aroma despite the years passed since bottling. Strong fruit flavours developing into almondy bitterness. The finish is very dry indeed. The texture is dry, and in this case the beer was rather flat. Still, a perfect aperitif it is- to be enjoyed by the (champagne) glass rather than by the bottle.

Bottle (375ml - green and corked). At The Abbey, Ottawa. My 400th rating. Poured very bubbly gold (with a hint of rose colour there), a small off-white head , looked a bit like spanish sparkling wine. Aroma pretty straightforward, yeasty and powerfully tart and champagne-like (it’s a nose-tickler), with faint hints of fruits (raspberry? strawberry?). Taste is puckeringly sour, but you quickly develop a taste for it - bit like unsweetened lemon drops and champers, again that vague tart fruitiness is hidden in there like the aroma. *WARNING* - drinking this will make you almost immediately have to piss like a racehorse. Palate - well, acidic, lively. Overall I’m happy to have had a couple of "real" lambics now, and while this isn’t really my thing, I think I could develop a taste for this - could be the perfect summer beer ... my mouth stayed puckered for half an hour after I left the pub, I couldn’t bring myself to have a mint, I couldn’t risk it.

Pours a reddish orange color with a slightly pink tinged head. the aroma is extremely tart and sour with hints of funk and raspberries. The flavor is the exact same... raspberries and tartness abound in this beer. I truly love the bitter/sourness of this beer. in order to enjoy this beer, you have to be able to pucker up!!

Pours orange-amber with a slight red tint and a half-finger head. Funky, tart, and fruity aroma—in that order. Ever eat a Sourpatch Kid? Well, it tastes like that, only with a funky background, like if you ate a strong cheese and then a Sourpatch Kid. The raspberry comes through slightly with a pleasant tartness. This one’ll pucker your lips.

Smells like acid reflux after consuming a raspberry tart. What makes people drink this stale sour stomach acidy stuff. It looks very attractive with a lot of carbonation and a pale pink blush. But it’s all downhill from there.

Pink with copper hues. Small, hissing, bubbly, white head disappears quickly. Carbonation bubbles coat the inside of the entire glass. Wild yeast and sour raspberries in the aroma. Same flavor with a matching aftertaste. Dry finish. Light/medium body. Less carbonation than expected. Beautiful beer.

Same sourness as a gueuze but with the sweetness of fresh raspberries. I could almost feel the gnashing of berries in my mouth. Very naturally flavored without the heaviness of sugars or extracts. It looked like bubbly Capri Sun. The finish was bitter and medicinal. Re-Rate 7/19/2006 - What the hell was I thinking the first time? Perhaps I just wasn’t ready for it. Overtime, this style has grown on me a bit. And after visiting Brussels, I don’t know what could be more indicative of the taste and style of the country - a beer culture with a wine influence.
