Commercial Description:
"It has the colour of onion skin", said a voice behind me. It was Raymond Coumans. He was admiring the colour of the raspberry lambic reflecting in the red copper of the buckets used to empty the barrels. At that time (1986), "Raspberry-Lambic" already was synonymous with a sweet, artificially flavoured beer. This is why we decided to distinguish our beer from the other raspberry beers. Raymond proposed to call it a rosé, dedicated not to Bacchus but to Gambrinus.

The process to make this beer is identical to the one to make Kriek. When young, the Rosé de Gambrinus will still present its full fruity taste. Later on, the lambic taste will become dominant at the expense of the fruit taste.

Bottle at the Rake, 24th July 09. Bright red in colour. Strong sour aroma and initial taste, but quite sweet once it is on the tongue. Controlled sourness and good tart raspberry flavours. Enjoyable.

375 mL bottle from Whole Foods Market, Cary, NC. Bottled in 2008. Pours a slightly hazy deep ruby color with a thin head. Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma of dry peppery wood notes with dry funk and raspberries. Taste is dry funkiness with citrus, dry berry notes, a bit of pepper and leafiness. Smooth, tart. Medium bodied.

Bottled Oct 1, 2008. Consumed Nov 18, 2009. pours a dark pink with a white head. Aroma of socks, leather, tart cherries, wet dog. Flavor is tight. Really tart raspberries or cherries, funky cheese, toast. For me, this is a perfectly balanced lambic-fruit beer. Nice crisp and dry mouthfeel. Beyond refreshing. This beer is awesome.

1997 Vintage from the Tampa Crew friends. Pours hectic red brown color with minimal head. Nose is raspberry, more funk than George Clinton, and yeasty vinegar. Flavor is similar with enough sweet raspberry to be sweet and enough sour tart funk to be sour. Incredibly balanced, and I do not like sours, generally. Excellent, and makes me curious about Cantillion.

Great bright ruby pour with fantastically pillowed head. Deep cherry aromas are first noticed, sweet and fruity and contrasted totally by the intensity of souring tartness. Palate twinging then softening this delightful brew leaves a puckering workout for the palate. nice

This was the best sour beer I’ve ever had. We opened a bottle from 1996 at the Sour Hour over at Blind Lady and this just blew my mind. It was a very profound sour experience, to say the least.

A nice pretty pink color, the foam was small and disappeared quickly. Raspberries and a little cherry in the aroma and classic Cantillon-funk, but a mild one. The taste was dominated by raspberries, citrus, yeast and some sourness, not extreme in any way. Very refreshing with a dry finish.

1997 bottle from a kind soul at a Tampa Tasting group gathering. Pours a hazy caramel color with red highlights and a thin white head. Aroma is sweet and floral with notes of caramel, vinegar, overripe cherries, ripe berries, some light funk. Flavor is tart with notes of ripe cherries and berries, light vinegar, vinous esters. Medium body with a sour fruit finish.

Pours a bright cherry red color with a fizzy pinkish .5 finger head that quickly fizzles into a lasting ring. Nothing in the way of lacing. This just looks like artificial cherry syrupy food coloring. Earthy funky sour tart aroma with lots of horseblanket barnyard notes, raspberry and grape. Very vinous with an organic fruit presence that isn’t artificial or syrupy. Oaky wooden tannis notes add to the earthy funk. Slightly puckering sour tart flavor with a lot of organic raspberry as well as some grape and other dark estery fruits. Pretty carbonated up front with a lot of earthy sour barnyard funk along with some lactic tart notes. There is also a good bit of earthy oak that balances out the sweetness and sharp tar funkiness very well. Slightly acidic but overall pretty drinkable. Probably my least favorite Cantillon offering I’ve had so far but still decent.
