Tranquillity (1027), Espoo, Finland Apr 25, 2008 Shared with fatphil (below). Fresh aroma of the thornbuck, with honey and vanilla. Complex as hell. Cucumber, lingonberry, grapefruit and vanilla in the sweet and very sour taste. Unfortunately lingeonberry and grapefruit are not my piece of fruit, that’s why the rating is low for this magnificient beer.

Aroma is very much within the Cantillon mould: very sharp with some funk around the edges. Strong acidic aroma pervade the experience, drawing on apple cider vinegar and lemon juice for inspiration. Behind that comes the ubiquitous Lambic horse blanket element, along with unlit matchsticks, wool, alfalfa and lichen. At the very edge of detectability, a light oak vibe. Tart and tannic berries rest atop everything, never getting in the way, but noticeable enough. Age has probably given the berries a reserved attitude. The flavour is very dry, tart and acidic as would be expected. There is a touch of tannins running through it, but not enough to distort or otherwise damage the experience. It should get old after so many bottles of Cantillon, but the scorchingly sour and dry finish is marvellous. Lingering acids and wood in the aftertaste -- retronasal finds some grapefruit. Light bodied with moderate carbonation, but the real story is the wonderfully slick, acidic body that slides away so easily, yet leaving so much flavour behind. The reserved yeast shot is mellow and has a touch of leather. A great beer, perhaps right above average for a Cantillon product. Worth the cost of admission for the experience, if not for the product. 375ml bottle at One Pint Pub (Helsinki), 2002 vintage. Alas I was "tired and emotional" when I had this so my notes are scant. One thing’s clear though - this one’s *sharp*! Fortunately I’m familiar with Sea Buckthorn (’tyrni’), and immediately recognised the berry’s distinctive sharp aroma and sharp taste. The usual Cantillon sharp bretty lambic body supporting it was as good and sharp as ever - a perfect sharp antidote to an overdose of heavy Danish stouts etc. Did I mention how sharp it was? But in absolutely *no* way unpleasant. Cantillon never cease to amaze me!
