Original bottle courtesy of...Brian at Zwanze Day, also 2012 vintage. Tart red fruit, though not detectable as rhubarb because the flavor of rhubarb is kind of naturally overlapped with the flavor of a lambic in the first place, highish carbonation level, funk more detectable on the old bottling versus in your face sourness on the new. Very good but lacks the oomph of a LP Kriek or St. Lamvinus.

Zwanze Day 2012 on tap at Redlight Redlight. Review of 2012 next to 2008. Not overly cloudy, but a hazy orange/peach body. No head, save some bubbles. All the aromas of a Cantillon lambic. Lemon zest acidity and a muted funk. Fruity, but I wouldn’t claim it to be rhubarb. Tastes fruity, without being a distinctive rhubarb flavor. It seems as if the rhubarb gave the acidity of the beer fruity character without being a definitive fruited sour, if that makes sense. Finishes like other Cantillon fruited lambics. Musty without being overly funky. Clean and pretty sour. Crisp, spritzy. Nicely acidic without being overbearing. Well carbonated. No surprise here. I had this along side Zwanze 08 and Fou Foune 12. Fou Foune 12 was a significantly better beer. The fruit character is spectacular by comparison. The 4 year old Zwanze, however, had a much better lambic profile. It had funked up nicely and hadn’t turned too sour. No fruit character left, though.

05-05-16 // sample at Cantillon Quintessence 2015. Labeled as Zwanze 2012, but a new batch brewed. Sour, with notes of rhubarb, funky, dry, earthy. Excellent brew.

Slightly hazy peach color with pearl white head. Aroma is really fruity and sour with lots of farmhouse funk. Taste is sour but not puckering, really fruity and fresh, not too acidic. Really interesting fruit profile, another great lambic from Cantillon.

Small, smattering of white head sits atop a rich, copper-golden body with light carbonation and high clarity.
Ahhhh, finally some sulfur! I’m amazed we’ve gone 11 lambics with very little, if any, sulfur character in the nose (which I love). Add to that a very still-present, juicy rhubarb character and you’ve got quite the bizarre, ultra-funky lambic nose. The rhubarb is difficult to describe. Certainly there is that tart/acidic character present, but past that, I wouldn’t call it highly vegetal, or at least not in the bad sense of the word. There’s even some spiciness to it (light black/white pepper). Lactic acid lingering on the finish nicely, with soft minerality and lots of cellar-like mustiness to balance this lovely juicy rhubarb. No alcohol or flaw.
Soft in the mouth, with light yet tight carbonation and lightly to moderately sweet honey-vanilla notes complementing the pureed rhubarb juiciness and light acetic character. Great depth of flavor, and the malt is matched perfectly to the both the bacteria and rhubarb acids. Long finish, very funky. Certainly wins most drinkable-yet-unique lambic of the day, though I still prefer the non-fruit/vegetable lambics at the tasting (and in general). 8/5/8/5/16
2012 750mL bottle drunk 8/13/16
Soft, light mineral, light sulfur again. Bigger white and black pepper character in the nose with even some light lavender suggestions, perhaps. Definitely more wood and less intense rhubarb juice, which is odd, given the 4 year difference. Definitely not as evened out, as a result, but with very enjoyable aromatics and light brett and lacto lingering behind it all. No alcohol or flaw.
Black pepper in the mouth with lots of "mint"-like character and soft, pleasant, vegetal notes from the rhubarb. Some sharpness from the wood, a touch like Crianza, adding both flavor and tannin/body. A touch of alcohol on the finish, mixing with dry, very bitter rhubarb juice. Tight carbonation. Earthy grapefruit rind and very light brett lingering. Obviously a bit bigger/fuller of a lambic all around than the 2008, but I’m sure given time this will probably be even more softly rich and juicy/flavorful than the 2008. 8/5/9/5/17

Note: I do not know what rhubarb smells or tastes like. As Zwanze 2012 version. A 750ml bottle at the brewery. Poured into a Cantillon tasting glass. It poured a hazy golden orange colour with a half finger white head that dissipated fairly quickly and left almost no lacing. Aromas were tart, funky and oak with a touch of leather and some fruitiness (which I will assume is rhubarb). Tastes sour, tart and funky. Some hay, lemon, grapefruit and a tart fruitiness (which again I will assume is rhubarb). Dry-ish, light bodied with low to moderate carbonation. Overall another nice beer from Cantillon and my first Zwanze. I do kind of wish I tried actual rhubarb first before trying this beer so that I had at least an idea of how close or how strong the rhubarb came through. But in any case, this was still very good.

Draft 0.15l at Oedipus Carnivale Brettanomyces 2016 Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 23.06.2016. Taste as Cantillon Zwanze 2012. Pour it hazy golden-orange color with small white head. Aroma rhubarb, some red fruits as well. Taste starts with lemons feel, continues with rhubarb, quite dry and sour all the time, long finish, nice balanced, tart, smooth feel. Really nice!

Bottle at Cantillon. Aroma of tart, red fruit and old wheat. Fresh taste of sourness, oaky tart, wheat and sweet red fruit that must be the rhubarb. Very nice variant.

On draft at Soveriegn in Georgetown. Pours a hazy gold with an off white head. Lovely tart funky nose. Classic barn yard and saddle blanket notes with a bit of rhubarb flavor poking throught. Very tasting.
