Every year, Cantillon has open brewing days, with animation, known as "Zwanze" in Brussels’ dialect. Fortwith, a special beer will be released every year, with every year a new ingredient: rhubarb for 2008.

Original bottle courtesy of...Brian at Zwanze Day, also 2012 vintage. Tart red fruit, though not detectable as rhubarb because the flavor of rhubarb is kind of naturally overlapped with the flavor of a lambic in the first place, highish carbonation level, funk more detectable on the old bottling versus in your face sourness on the new. Very good but lacks the oomph of a LP Kriek or St. Lamvinus.

Bottle at the brewery, marked as Zwanze 12. Pours a clear deep golden color with an off white head. Very unique aroma, with a mix of herbs and spices, with a good sour lambic backbone. Very sour flavor that lingers long into the finish, but offset by the rhubarb character. In my top 3 of the Cantillon beers I’ve tried so far.

Bottle during Brussels vacation, as Zwanze 2012. Golden with white head. Aroma tart, sour, vinegar, berries and rhubarb. Taste is fairly sour, complex, bretty, vinegar and tart fruits. Really nice

Bottle at the brewery, shared, 14th April 2015. Pours a hay coloured slightly hazy beer, aroma is funk, hay, farmyard, hops and fruit. Taste is complex, tart fruit, hay, rhubarb. Lovely

Hoprider (141) - DENMARK - APR 14, 2015
Appearance: almost clear golden with hint of reddish hue. Nose: farmy, slight rhubarb. Some dairy qualities as well. Mouthfeel is lively and taste is tart with hint of first of summer rhubarb. Aftertaste is long with sweeter red fruit.. Sweeter being relative. Really sour most of all but that is perfectly fine.

Cloudy orangy color under a little foam hat. The smell is sour and dry. The beer reminds me strongly of the cantillon iris. Maybe a not more on the aggressive sour side than on the hoppy one. The aftertaste is typically sour and long lasting. This beer meets my taste buds almost perfectly.

Golden color with big white head. Fresh, funky and bitter. Rhubarb is always interesting. It has that magical funk feeling. Very refreshing, but still challenging. Fizzy carbonation. Amazing! A masterpiece.

January 23, 2015. Bottle at Cantillon, as Zwanze 2012. Shared with Douberd.
Golden with a white head. Aroma is earthy, funky, citrus with the typical rhubarb acidity. Taste is tart fruity with rhubarb, lemon and apple skins along with earthy barnyard notes, dry and lasting acidic finish. Light to medium bodied, soft carbonation.

Beerconnaiseur (166) - BELGIUM - FEB 3, 2015
Pours hazy golden with frothy head, medium retention. Aromatic elements that come up are pepper sniff, hop acids, earth, sour, tartness, co2. Taste is predominantly rubarb peel, lactic acid, barnyard, hops, grapefruit, citrus. Strong acidic aftertaste, lingers on forever! We have the bitterness of the rubarb and hops combined, to thank for that.

(Cantillon Zwanze (2008)) 750 ml bottle shared with hackobock, as Zwanze 2012. Slightly hazy body, bright golden yellow in colour, big white head, thick enough to have a good retention. Aroma of grapes, cork, wood, vegetables-like aroma but the ones that grow on a field, difficult to describe. Taste is quite sour with again the aforementioned vegetables, I guess is the rhubarb, wild plantation, light white sour grapes. Quite tart on the palate, medium thin body, average carbonation. Good, surely interesting.
