UPDATED: FEB 23, 2014 One of my least favorite Cantillon offerings, probably because itís not a lambic and instead has this weird sweet fruit/bitter rind combo flavor that I couldnít get into. Pass.

Bottle at Cantillon. Pours an almost clear amber with a small, off White head. Aroma has lots of caramel malts, dates, tartness and funk, vanilla, oak. Taste is sour, leathery, still fairly sweet and caramelish. Not very complex, but very different. Harsh and leathery. AVG. Carb, oily body. Not very good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle @ Cantillon. Pours hazy orange with a medium white head. Aromas of caramel, malt, tart notes, yeast, cheese, funk. Taste is cheesy, bitter, malty, caramel, tart citrus, orange, yeast, grapefruit peel.

Aroma of hay, caramel, a bit of banana-bubblegum, with a nice lambic undertone, the tripel part of it seems to overtake it a bit, and feels slightly oxidized. Very different and nice beer, but the refreshing notes seem to have disappeared, and leaves more of a heavier, but not so full on tasting beer.

(Cantillon Zwanze (2013) Abbaye de Cureghem) Tap 250 ml at Moeder Lambic during Zwanze Day. Deep orange to amber, with a small frothy head on top. Average retention. Nice aroma, grape-y,some candy sugar, wood, vinous notes. Taste is mildly sweet and sour, light grapes, lemon, vinous notes. Medium thin body, a bit high on carbonation. Nice

Bottle at the brewery. Pours orange amber with a beige head. Aroma has some caramel, vanilla, oak, leather and funk. The taste has some caramel, leather, balsamic, grapefruit feel and is pretty bitter, sweet and funky at the same time. Strange and unexpected indeed.

Drank this complicated beauty at this years Zwanze day at Mother Lambic Fontainas. I got a lovely glass of light brown orange-amber beer with a thin, white, open moussy head in front of me... Right... where for Lambicssake do you start discribing this sort of beer?! Iíll just jot down what I found, but donít think thatís all to it, thereís a world more in there, but I donít have all day, so you better start exploring that in your own time... The aroma I found was of sour grapes, wet leather, (unripe and green) fruit, beautiful lactic acidic notes, hint of orange like fruit, grape peel, and unfortunately (although apparently in Lambiek and Geuze completely accepted and normal) slight urinal whiff underlaying it all. This beer has an almost yoghurt-like soft sourness to its taste, with grape peel, sour plum, peach, grapefruit, notes of old sherry, earthy hints of hops that come from the background, nutty notes too. Itís got a bitter and sour aftertaste well balanced, and a silky, oily mouthfeel which is not too dry, infact I would tag this beer as rather fruity! And that rimes (how naff...) with what it is; a beauty! Actually, dissecting this kind of beer is fine and all that, but I think only poetry is best adapted and suited to describe this kind of craftmanship. Who knows, maybe Iíll give that a go one day, when imbibed with enough inspiration...!
