3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jefcon (1124) - Arlington, Virginia, USA - DEC 6, 2006
Brownish with pleasant spice aromas. Some brown sugar and lots of bready malts. The beer falls down on taste, lacking depth and rich caramel, however. Palate is long enough, but again lacks depth.

Tap at Barcade. Deep ruddy amber beer, very cloudy with a thick tan head. Sweet grape, apple and cherry fruit in the nose. There is a sweet maltiness, but it isn’t very caramelly or toasty, just a sweet base that lets all the fruity esters play out. Flavour is also fruit dominated with some orangey/pineappley hops. A bit of earthiness on the back, but mostly sweet fruit in a strongish beer that still manages to keep a sense of balance. Quite nice.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 ukoolaid (572) - Amherst, Massachusetts, USA - NOV 4, 2006
Bottle. Pours a light brown/amber with off white head. Aoma is sweet malts and cinnamon. Taste is very bready malt with many winter spices (nutmug, cinnamon, ect.) This is not my dopplebock of choice, but I got this bomber for under $4 and that can’t be beat.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 lordeche (469) - Quincy, Massachusetts, USA - APR 22, 2006
Pours dark amber with medium head. Very spicy aroma: cinnamon, nutmeg, raisin, fig. Tastes very similar to the aroma, with heavy spices and molasses maltiness. Medium body with fizzy carbonation. Nice.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 wnhay (722) - Princeton, New Jersey, USA - APR 12, 2006
Dark amber pour with a thick tan head. Good head retention. The aroma had hints of currant, cinnamon caramel and raisin. Smooth taste with cinnamon, toffee caramel and currant plus dried fruits. Overall not a great Doppelbock in my opinion, but worth a try.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 jimhilt (2166) - Bow, New Hampshire, USA - APR 8, 2006
Pours a two finger light brown head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving a little lace. Cloudy amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Nutty nose. Starts malty but not very sweet, hops are there, finish has a bite. Not as sweet as the usual dopple bock. Alcohol isn’t noticeable. $5.20 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Dickinsonbeer (5076) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - MAR 26, 2006
Bock night @ Spuyten Duyvil. 22 oz bottle. Pours a nice deep amber but hazy with a fair amount of sediment possibly yeast and spice. Thin head fades quickly. Aroma is spicy- cinnamon, clove, etc along with a strong sweet caramel malt backbone. Sweet flavor, but almost becomes cloying. Caramle, toffee, dried fruits, plum, raisin, and a cherry-pie like finish. Good for a xmas brew, but I wasnt in the mood for this, especially since it didnt really represent anything close to a traditional doppelbock.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 OldGrowth (1859) - North Carolina, USA - JAN 17, 2006
Bottle, from Julio’s . Ok nose, sweet. Spice, Cinnamon and nutmeg, molasses, caramel. A little haze, orangy brown color. Small head that faded quicly, little if any lacing. Sweet & spiced flavor. Ok nose, like aroma, sweet & spice. Kind of like a ginger bread/apple pie mix. caramel too. Medium body, lite smooth creamy body, spiced caramely finish. Ok little lifeless, I would of thought classic Christmas ale.
2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 ClarkVV (3578) - Allston, Massachusetts, USA - FEB 24, 2005
UPDATED: JAN 25, 2006 Bomber from Julios consumed on 1/19/2006. The beer has traces of light sediment on the bottom (we’re talking very light) but still enough to give it a slight haziness towards the bottom of the bottle. At the top, it’s a clear burgundy to copper, with garnet tinges throughout. Mocha colored head is initially large, but rapidly fizzles away to a ring and even that is gone fairly quickly. The aroma is quick to point out the cinnamon and nutmeg, with sharp honey and molasses fermentation notes (seems to always leave a dry, borderline astringent and lightly sour note). Fair amount of breadiness and perhaps a touch of anise. Medium strength. The flavor wastes no time in assailing the palate with too much cinnamon and ginger. Neither full-bodied nor particularly well-textured, the rather watery, loose consistency does not support the full amount of dry, bready malts (stale, white flour biscuits at that) and overspicing. Aside from the breadiness, there’s not much in the way of a doppelbock that is able to get passed the spicing. No alcohol apparency.
