2009-09-03 and 2009-09-04, draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm
Cloudy red-amber color; creamy head, a small cap of foam is persistent.
The aroma has a decent smoke touch going along with the malt and caramel, woody as well, and with a tear of peaty whiskey; later some cereals appear.
Full bodied, rich malt and caramel flavor; the sweetness happily marry the smoke, without being syrupy; lightly tannic.
The final is malty, the sugar sticks on the lips, with caramel and a trace of smoke; it’s not extremely hopped like in others North American examples, but still it’s enough to reminds us that ain’t a smoked Doppelbock; it’s more enjoyable this way.
A whisky-barley wine. exploring a different terrain, with an interesting mix: sweetness, freshly cut wood, caramel and light smoke.

Big beer here. Had it on draft at Barcade in Brooklyn. Poured a nice, rich copper with a slight, fine white head. Aroma of bitter hops and some kind of tea, sure. Tasted very sweet, with undertones of hops and malt to give the beer a distinctive compexity. Felt great to drink, and the force of the beer made it a good beer to savor. An overall excellent experience.

I had this beer at a tasting recently. Poured from the tap into a small tasting glass. The color is a light amber yellow, with a soft white head. The smell has aroma of a woody tobacco type smell. The tea flavor is also noticeable in the smell. The taste is a smokey, sweet, tea type flavoring with a hint of malt and jasmine. This beer is a very easy drinking beer even with a high ABV. at about 9% It has a little kick but it does not make so noticeable. It’s a very subtle 9% ABV My first barleywine and I was quite impressed. Cape Ann Brewing Company is also a bit new to me as well. I do suggest giving this beer a shot. It is high on my list

Draught@Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Deep reddish amber colour with small beige head. Aroma is alcohol, roasted malts, some mild wooden, vanillaish and peaty notes. Flavour is quite much the same along with some raisins and more strong on the wooden notes than the aroma was.

Svesse (4389) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - SEP 7, 2009
(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark reddish amber colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with dried fruit, caramel, smoke and Lapsang tea. Malty taste with notes of dried fruit, smoke, orange peel and a generous citrussy, piney bitterness in the finish. Hops are balanced by the smokey malt. Full body, rather sweet. Lots of different flavours: smoke, fruit and hops. But everything comes together in good balance. On the extreme side, but in my opinion a lovely beer.

ante (3375) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - JAN 4, 2010
Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Pors out in a hazy deep reddish mahogny appearance with a asmall sticky off-white head. Rich rounded aroma of peat, smoke, caramel, figs, anise and burnt sugar. Full-bodied with chey notes of peat, tar, figs, raisins, licorice, burnt caramel and warming alcohol. Long warming finish of fudge, burnt caramel, figs, black pepper and prunes. Surprisingly tasty in it’s own rustic peaty character.

porterhouse (1543) - Alna, Maine, USA - JUL 26, 2011
(Draft @ brewpub) Served in a heavy goblet. Pours dark amber, mostly clear. Barely any head. Nose of slightly toasted caramel and a bit of fruit. Medium-heft, fairly smooth, lightly syrupy. Taste is predominated by smoke from fore through finish overlaying sweet dark caramel/toffee and a bit of fruit. Barkeep says the smokiness is produced by the tea. Kind of an "out there" barleywine, atypical.
