awaisanen (1259), Irvine, California, USA May 21, 2009 From a 12oz Bottle. Mostly transparent, root beer brown colored body with a thin layer of quickly dissipating, fizzy off-white foam. Clean, malty aromas of chocolate nougat, raisin, and toffee, although it definitely more of a Munich aroma than any dark fruits obtained through roasted malts. Would like a little bit more in terms of a dark malt character - more chocolate, licorice, or mild roast would be nice, as it’s lacking in this depth and somewhat more akin to a doppelbock. Medium bodied, lightly carbonated mouthfeel with a soft, malty texture. Lots of melanoidin flavors up front on the palate, rich and malty, but again, lacking in any real dark malt character. Toward the finish, a hint of roast comes out, mingling with the alcohol warmth, but it is very subtle. Hints of nutty malt. Exceptionally clean, but needs more dark malt character. Bottle: The aroma consists mostly of caramel along with some light toffee, fruit, and hints of smoke. It pours a transparent mahogany with a small beige head that quickly fades a thin film with a thicker ring around the edges of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate caramel with some molasses and dark fruits quickly following. The finish has a light chocolate cherry and a hint of grain. No hint of 8.5%. Medium bodied with mild carbonation and somewhat soft mouthfeel. EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA Mar 28, 2009 Easy drinking, light and dark flavors mixed. Kind of like drinking a black and tan that was not poured well. I have not had a lot of baltic porters and this reminds me that I need to track down a few of the better ones to try. bvc (95), Kenmore, Washington, USA Feb 14, 2009 12oz bottle shared by riversideAK. Pours a clear lighter brown color with little head. A caramel biscuit nose with hints of tobacco. Taste is faint with no serious flavors coming to the front. Some bread, caramel and dark fruit in there. Not a very inspiring beer. Cornfield (4758), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Jan 31, 2009 Bottle from the Binny’s in Willowbrook, IL: This pours a clear mahogany body with a decent tan head that soon reduces to some film and a ring around the glass. The aroma is a chocolatey dark toffee with hints of dried fruit. The flavor has a touch of roastiness, dark caramel, thin molasses, and raisins. Well hidden alcohol content. The sweet finish lasts for quite a while. Not bad. TKA300 (78), Carol Stream, Illinois, USA Jan 10, 2009 Very very dark brown with a very strong scent. Pretty foamy head that lasted for a fair amount of time. Tasted a lot like caramel and some oaky flavors, plus something I can’t really put my finger on. Finishes strong and lingers on the taste buds for a long time. WisconsinBeer (478), St Paul, Minnesota, USA Jan 9, 2009 Bottle. This beer is brown. Really fucking brown. Foamy head leaves lots of lacing. Flavor is caramel malt, candy sugar, some banana bread. Spice notes of cinnamon and a hint of pepper. Finish is lingering and a bit syrupy. Medium bodied. Solid. Tripplebrew (426), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Jan 9, 2009 Pours a clear nutmeg brown with very little tan head. Aroma is of a malt, cinnamon and dark bread. Flavor is a bit watery but of malts and chocolate. There are definite cola notes with how watery it is. Body is light with fair carbonation.
