Pours dark cola brown with thin beige head that sticks around. I get almost nothing in the nose. Tastes of roasted malts with a hint of pine. Agree with other ratings that calling this an IA is dumb.

Can. Light chocolate malt and orange peel aroma. Black-brown with large tan head. Sweet caramel-chocolate and moderately bitter orange peel flavor. Decent body. Not bad but straight forward.

Bottle. Deep cola colored pour with a small wispy head. Roasted malts and chocolate and just a hint of citrus. Not what I’d call a straight black IPA, but who cares, it’s good.

Patrickctenchi (3441) - Cox’s Knob, columbus, Indiana, USA - JUN 23, 2014
Can: Pours black with a tall, thick, tan head. Licorice, bitter chocolate aroma. Flavour is lactic chocolate malt, roasty... Not bad, but the lactic sweetness detracts from the hops.

AWISLguy (1175) - Wisconsin, USA - JUN 19, 2014
On tap at Nitty Gritty. Pours a very dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma has lots of chocolate and cocoa. Perhaps faint citrus. Later in the glass, some grapes show through. Taste is sweet cocoa, some caramel, a bit of grapefruit if you squint. Medium bodied. Finishes more sweet than bittersweet, but with some bitterness hanging in for balance. A light porter? Not unpleasant.

Bottle. Very dark, but the richness is pleasant and smooth, but punched through with hops. Ate with white peaches -- why was really refreshing!

[Bottle] Extremely dark pour with a rocky light brown head on top. Aroma is of anise, charred malts, ash and some pine sap. Taste is soundly of anise/licorice. Lighter flavor notes of bitter piney hops, brown sugar, molasses and bitter chocolate. Astringent and grainy finish. Lighter in body. Prickly carbonation. This is a great IPA if you like licorice more than hops.

Dark red/brown pour w/ a tan head. Aroma is roasted malt. Taste is roasted malt and hops. Roasted malt aftertaste. Great lacing.

Scipio (682) - Palatine, Illinois, USA - APR 28, 2014
Pours a very deep brown with a medium to full beige head that settles slowly. The aroma is malty and more subtle. I find roasted malts, chocolate, grapefruit, a bit of coffee, and licorice. The taste remains more malty with some bitterness to it. Chocolate and grapefruit are on top, with subtle undertones of lemon, licorice, and coffee. There is a solid presence of earthy malts throughout. Medium bodied, with a thicker texture, and about average in carbonation. This is a solid beer. This my not be the best offering of a style that I enjoy, fans of Black IPAs will still be happy.

12oz bottle (80 IBU) into Le Duvel - Nose is a disappointment: metal sugar caramel. Roast and mild hoppy flavor. Sip is way better than nose, to my relief. long roast finish, but not too pronounced. My affinity for this brewer is waning quickly.

Cola pour. Nose of moderate pine hopping, cocoa, brown sugar, and faint roasted malt. Flavor is brown sugar and pine hops with a trailing light roasted malt. Lingering pine. Okay, pretty easy drink.
