Without a doubt the finest dark beer brewed in the United States. Styled after a traditional Munchener-Dunkel, Dark is a rich, delicious beer combined with excellent drinkability - a rare combination.

This beer poured a very dark reddish amber, almost black color. Off white head that had little lace. A light aroma of malt and chocolate. Some carbonation. A flavor of malt and chocolate. A good beer, but their Dopplebock is better.

On par with Beck’s Dark and Heineken Dark, I’d say. I liked it.

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2004 Dark clear reddish brown in color with a small white head doesn't last, with not much in lacing. Bready and nutty aromas, starts sweet and bready with some caramel and nutty flavors, medium bodied, with a nice rounded mouthfeel, finishes smooth and sweet.

Brown-mahogany color. Delicate aroma includes light perfumey English hops, toast, cream, cardboard, and caramel. (Reminiscent of Lagunitas Amber ale) Flavors are very mild, and consist of candied malt and underlying chocolate. Finishes notably dry and bitter. All in all not a very flavorful brew, but the quality I expect from such a style is here. A clean and very drinkable Dark Lager and a very beloved style.

Crystal clear copper. Thin off white head. Very light carbonation. Aroma of toasted caramel malts and spicy hops. Medium bodied. Toasty with burnt caramel notes. Nicely bittered and balanced with a spicy German hop bite. Moderately dry. Finishes bitterly malty. A respectable Dark German lager with a healthy malt profile and feisty hop edge.

Labelled Munich dark with a different (new?) label. Great dark malt flavor, with initial roastiness that fades into malt complexity, balanced just right with a nice kick of hops that demand another sip. Excellent take on a style that is difficult to do well.

This is pretty remarkable stuf - it has a small taste, but small and crisp and clean with decent dark malts pleasantly accented. Hints of cherry and vanilla. I like!

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2003 Little in the way of aroma, slightly fruity. Very appealing dark clear red-brown color. Very nice sweet malty flavors, mild tasting. Good head retention, makes for a visually appealing brew. Soft body and extremely smooth. Recommended for anyone looking for a dark, smooth German style beer. I would purchase again.
