3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 CanIHave4Beers (2512) - Des Moines, Iowa, USA - AUG 30, 2010
Pours a deep reddish brown with a medium head. The aroma is coffee and caramel with some husky graininess. The flavor is excellent and complex. Notes of deep roastiness akin to coffee and toasted bread along with a herbal hoppiness that provides a nice bitter balance to the malt complexities of roast fruit and mild caramel. The finish is malty. A very elegant beer indeed.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 madvike (2128) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - APR 25, 2010
Bottle - Pours clear mahogany with next to no head. Sharp and bitter on the nose, with alcohol, a candi sugar smell, and light malt. Feels syrupy sweet and unbalanced. Taste is sweet malt, sugary, with bitter malt, a touch of caramel, and some light toasted notes. Watery and thin in the mouth with a lot of carbonation, this one was pretty unpleasant all around. Did I get a bad bottle?
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Soonah (1120) - Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA - APR 16, 2010
Label said Capital Dark Lager, I’ll assume this is that beer unless I hear otherwise. Cola-like pour with a short off-white head and minimal lacing. Toasty malts and sugary sweetness along with some light spice. The flavor was nutty and toasted malts with a touch of sweetness. Thin body with lots of carbonation.

Appearance: Pours a deep, dark brown with a good head. Wonderful lacing.
Aroma: The aroma really blossoms as it sits a couple minutes. Deep and malty, hints of raisin.
Flavor: Very malt forward beer with subtle hop balance. Raisin and plum fruitiness balance a pleasant bitterness. Lingering finish.
Mouthfeel: Clean, medium bodied beer. Goes down easy and before you know it, you’re ready for the next sip.
We had the pleasure of meeting head brewer Kirby Nelson at Steve’s Liqours, where he was promoting some winter beers and offering tastings. He’s a fantastically nice fellow, and a Zappa fan (he names all their fermenters after Zappa songs - pics coming). Having studied with a German lager master, this beer definitely plays to Kirby’s strong points. Highly recommended.
