Without a doubt the finest dark beer brewed in the United States. Styled after a traditional Munchener-Dunkel, Dark is a rich, delicious beer combined with excellent drinkability - a rare combination.

Decent dunkel. Capital can be hit or miss with their German-styled lagers, this one is middle of the road, however.

Pours a mahogany brown with a creamy tan head and lots of effervesence. Nose is toffee and chocolate. Very creamy on the palate. Nicely balanced brew with hints of toffee, chocolate, caramel and vanilla. No bitterness noted. A pleasant brew that both looks and tastes good. Pairs well with pretzels or pastrami on rye.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2010 I kind of like this, wait, why wouldn’t I? Dark beer is usually misleading, because it is kind of clear. Tastes great though!

Bottle, labeled Capital Dark. Pours clear mahogany with a creamy, beige, 2 finger head. Aroma is sweet crusty bread, toast, sweet grain, light floral notes, a touch of chocolate and toasted nuts. Flavor is grainy malt, toast, bread crust, caramel, a touch of chocolate and toasted nuts and a touch of roast. Palate is fairly light bodied slightly slick on entry leading to an off-dry middle and finish. Pretty good, it lacks a bit of depth and richness of flavor compared to some dunkels, but makes up for it somewhat by being smooth and quaffable.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown, with hints of ... purple...? Lots of nice foamy head that quickly settles to a nice thin film. Aroma is of dark toasted malts. Flavor is also of toasted malts, but has some hints carmel too. Pretty robust and interesting to start with but it seems to peter out at the end. They after taste is a bit watery, for lack of a better word. Shows a tiny bit of lacing (just a few patches here and there). Mouthfeel is very moderate and seems appropriate. A much better brew than I was expecting. It’s actually quite good except for that watery finish/after taste.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a medium head. The aroma is coffee and caramel with some husky graininess. The flavor is excellent and complex. Notes of deep roastiness akin to coffee and toasted bread along with a herbal hoppiness that provides a nice bitter balance to the malt complexities of roast fruit and mild caramel. The finish is malty. A very elegant beer indeed.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm) Dark brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with notes of caramel, dark bread, raisins and dried fruit. Malty, roasted taste with dark bread, raisins and caramel. Slightly grassy bitterness. Medium body, balanced sweetness. A decent dark lager.

Bottle - Pours clear mahogany with next to no head. Sharp and bitter on the nose, with alcohol, a candi sugar smell, and light malt. Feels syrupy sweet and unbalanced. Taste is sweet malt, sugary, with bitter malt, a touch of caramel, and some light toasted notes. Watery and thin in the mouth with a lot of carbonation, this one was pretty unpleasant all around. Did I get a bad bottle?
