3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 madsberg (7568) - Søborg, DENMARK - APR 1, 2007
Bottled. (Txh to Sammy for the trade). Orange/amber coloured. Unclear. Dense beige head. High carbonation. Sweetness, fruits (ripe), alcohol and light liqourice in the aroma. Flavour is very alcoholdense. Has sweetness and fruits. Is light flowery and has some honey notes. Quite full bodied. Is a bit sharp and offensive, yes almost "rough" in the end. Alcohol is very warming and last long.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 hopscotch (7526) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAY 2, 2006
Bottle... DLD06... This beer rocks!.... Clear, deep amber lager with a small, creamy, khaki head. The flavor is all about caramel... period! Well, ok, a little nutty and chocolatey with a whisper of tawny port. Very sweet up front, but balanced nicely by bitter hops and bitter alcohol on the backside. Full-bodied and oily with pillow-soft carbonation. Finishes bitter-sweet. World class sipping brew! Thanks to hezron for the sample!
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Tmoney99 (7300) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JUN 21, 2010
Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured clear copper with an average head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate floral hop aroma with a small alcohol tone. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Eisbock’s are always interesting to sample.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 hopdog (7043) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 31, 2007
12oz bottle acquired in multiple trades (Styles, footbalm & iowaherkeye). Poured a deeper amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of toasted malts, bready, nuts, caramel, and yeast. Tastes of toffee, caramel, dark fruits (plums, raisins and some dark cherries), and nuts. A touch of alcohol warmth in the finish, but no where near the 10%.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 CaptainCougar (6834) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - JUL 14, 2006
UPDATED: MAY 7, 2008 Bottle cellared since release, sampled on 5/7/08: Pours a transparent dark copper bronze with a nicely-lacing froth of light beige head. Sweet complex caramely German malty nose has some light fruity esters present and a touch of biscuity character. Body starts rich and full with a nice sweet authenticity and good balance of noble bittering hops. Alcohol is well-hidden in the finish. A very nice eisbock.
Sampled from a growler courtesy of hezron at the post DL06 tasting: Clear dark copper orange pour has a lightly-lacing frothy white head. Aroma of sweet, lightly toasted caramel with nice, subtle noble hoppy character. Body starts sweet with a nearly full mouthfeel, nicely balanced with smooth toasty sweet malty notes and a touch of bittering drier hops. Very enjoyable and authentic beer with good complexity. I sure hope they make this again.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BMan1113VR (6501) - Los Angeles, California, USA - AUG 25, 2011
Bottle (I think this is an older bottle, labeled 9.8%). Pours with a murky amber body with a small khaki head that fades to a ring after a minute or so. Aromas are deeply malty, vinous, raisins, dark fruits, dates, figs and caramelization. Lots of melanoidins, rich malt, toasty and bready. Great. Noticeable alcohol, and even a touch of fusel, but otherwise good and clean. Flavors are big, malty, bready, melanoidins, alcohol, dark fruits, raisins, pumpernickel, and warming. Light lingering bitterness, very rich with a kettle caramelization feel. Alcohol is there but in no way oppressive. Finishes a bit crisp and not sticky sweet in anyway. Lightly warming, but restrained. Fuller body, light bubbles. Good!
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 3fourths (6400) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 15, 2007
12oz bottle thanks to kmweaver. Clear copper color, off-white head. Sharp maple and sweet cherry flavored tobacco in the nose, abundent roast orange scented hops and some pretty high alcohol wafting out of the glass. Sharp, sticky tobacco and alcohol and brandy flavor, sharp and intense, for sure, but the palate is quite mellow, tastes aged but not spoiled or oxidized.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 11, 2007
My Bottom Line:
This Eisbock’s chewy mouthfeel benefits from a lucrative caramel maltiness and an apple taffee fruitiness. Alcohol warns and warms up the sipper; this is one for your deepest couch.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam skirts the hazy amber-red.
-Discreet herbal hops don’t achieve balance, but I don’t believe that was their purpose anyway.
-Freshly-crushed grain is always a pleasure to perceive.
-The fruitiness is quite complex and seamlessly blends in with the malty sweetness.
Bottle; thx Jason!
3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sammy (6119) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 4, 2006
Pleasant eisbock sent in by jpm30 and by flyingbison. Above averge for the style but does not touch the Niagara Falls version in tate or hoppiness, with maltiness most pronounced, and the alcohol hidden. Suitable carbonated and easily and dangerously drinkable.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 BeerandBlues2 (6096) - Lone Tree, Colorado, USA - FEB 1, 2007
12-oz. bottle provided via trade with Monger. Pours sparkling amber with a small fizzy light brown head, somewhat diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (grain, toasted, nutty), average hops (grass), average yeast (sweat) with notes of raisin, date and dust. Medium bodied, alcoholic texture, average carbonation and an astringent finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness, salty. This beer had some slight oxidation issues; the alcohol was well hidden and really only showed up in the texture.
