Dark black body. One bottle Poured with a nice lasting 1.5 inch head, the other Poured with a 1/2 inch fast dissipating one. Spicy sweet aroma. Heavy tasting beer. Flavors of pepper, sweet malt, mild bitterness. This is a big improvement over some of the old Capital beers. Looking forward to trying some other new ones.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Decent sized head of very fine, dense and creamy bubbles that recede slowly. Dark roasted malts, hint of smoke, dark berries and a touch of soy. Color is a very dark brown. Very smooth and creamy on the palate from the strong malt profile. More roasted malts, soy sauce, molasses and some ash. Light alcohol presence. A pretty strong and roasty finish that lasts for a while. A pretty decent schwartzbier.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled. Pours a dark baker’s chocolate brown with a clamshell tan head. Rich, slightly smokey and grainy aroma, a mix of toasted pumpernickel and fresh prairie grasses with a little bit of cola and roasted peanuts. Prairie grasses and straw notes follow into the flavor, along with some slightly roasted coffee, caramel, and a bit of overripe plum. Marshmallowy smooth texture with fine carbonation, though the finish is a touch watery. Thanks to Elwood62 for the bottle!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled on draught at the Aqualand Ale House in Boulder Jct., Wisconsin, and at Great Northern Beer Festival in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Pours a dark root beer brown colored brew with a decent sized off-white head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind excellent lacing and a cream top. Aroma of roasted dark malt, floral hops, a hint of citrus and some cocoa. Taste is medium bodied, flavors of chocolate and caramel, roasted cocoa, vanilla and some very faint coffee. Finish is quite smooth, with a short roasted dark malt and floral hop aftertaste. Some of the smoothest scharzbiers I’ve tried.
