Great-looking, lasting head, nice dark gold color. Sweet malt and a little alcohol in the nose, much the same in the flavors. Nice hop spiciness to balance. Sweet, oily mouthfeel makes this a very enjoyable bock.

A good balance of the sweetness and malt favor. Even friends I know who can’t stand bock beers find themselves ordering one

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: APR 18, 2004 A magnificent clear brownish-yellow color. Foam starts rocky but turns into a ring of creamy lace with little stickiness. Popcorn, clover honey, alcohol, and sweet malt aroma. The slight syrupy mouthfeel and lively carbo. do a more than adequate job in coating the buds. Sweet toasted malt and noticeable alcohol round this brew out nicely.

Bottle. A fairly smooth beer with a malty flavor that finishes nicely.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2004 2002 Version: Very simislar to this year fest. I need to do a side by side. Nobel hops aroma and flavor. Enough malt to back up the hop. A very good domestic pale bock. Aroma 8, Appearance 4, Flavor 8, Palate 4, Overall 13 - Rate 4.0
2004 Version: Light amber with a dence beige head. Nice lace. Faint malt and light nobel hops. Light malt sweetness with a mild bitterness and a sharp alcohol bite late. Malt complexity gone this year. Perhaps a poor malt year. Aroma 6, Appearance 4, Flavor 6, Palate 3, Overall 12 - Rate 3.0

Clear light gold with some suspended fish food specks. Light white head. Modest carbonation. German aroma of sweetly toasted malts, spicy hops and trace alcohol. Medium bodied. Full of toasted malts and a light teeth coating sweetness, topped with a healthy German hop spiciness. Palate cleansing, though warm and bracing with a noticeable alcohol whack. Clean, dryish and well balanced towards the end. Finishes toasty and spicy. Another well made brew.

Nicely crafted. Capital Brewery’s Maibock has a pale orange-yellow color with a soft white head. The aroma was really nice--very floral and winey. The body was pretty thick and had that almost-too-sweet malty presence characteristic of bock beers. Capital Maibock finished slighlty sour and with some hoppiness helping to balance the sweetness. Overall, I think this beer would have been better in a smaller dose, perhaps as an after dinner treat.

Hard to call something bad that has no real distinctive flavors. Very refreshing as a beer and a unexpected gift from returning friends.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
This beer is a pale bock with a fat malty sweetness, some balance in the hops and sweet honey-like finish. Not Capital’s best offering, but not bad. FYI I don’t particularly care for beers that finish too sweet, which makes it hard to find a bock beer that I’d rave about. (Dry finishing bocks are sort of an oxymoron.)
