Capital Munich Dark

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of dark fruit, some caramel, earthy. Tastes of some fruit, spice, caramel, toffee, chocolate.

A nice simple dark beer, though not a lot to it. Poured from the bottle to a dark chocolate brown with medium thick tan head that lasted to mid-glass and left okay lacing. Aroma was a faint caramel toffee as was the flavor of this medium bodied. Finish was smooth and medium duration, but again left no distinguishing mark. Kind of just ho-hum.

Dark amber brown pour with offwhite head. Aroma of toffee, caramel. Kind of smells like a candy dish with a bit of smoke. Flavor is caramel and chocolate with a light dryness. Smooth mouthfeel with dry finish. Pretty good.

12oz bottle. Filtered amber brown color with a small beige head. Medium bodied, some choco-toffee sweetness. Still has that macro aroma unfortunately. Some rich caramel tones as well. Certainly a step up from typical Capital swill, this one is actually flavorful and refreshing, as advertised...as for the finest dark beer in America, they must be out of their minds. No real hops to speak of besides the initial crispness. Nice and rich malt tones, that never get too sticky or overbearing. Lagered out and smooth, with solid specialty malt nuances.

Bottled ay Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Clear deep ruby, minimal head. Roasty bready nose with raisiny undertones. Mid-sry with clean mouthfeel and light-medium body. Behind a whiff of butterscotch some light salty bitterness comes out. A clean and sterile beer, very superficial.

Bottle from Archer Liquors. Pours a darkish ruby with a large beige head. Aroma of mildly darkish caramel. Near medium body with frothy carbonation. Flavor is smooth roasted caramel with a little bit of raisin or plum. Seems a tad nutty. Finishes unbitter, but not excessively sweet.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours dark clear brown with ruby hints. The aroma is sweet lager and fruits and the flavor is typical sweet flavors with slight roast. The mouthfeel is medium carbonation with a slight creaminess.

On tap at the brewery. Mostly transparent, coppery brown color with a thin layer of filmy off-white head. Undercarbonated relative to other draft offerings, but not unforgivably so. Somewhat thin, dark roasted malt aroma with hints of boiled coffee. Hints of nutty malt, but certainly not rich in malt depth. Clean, yeast-wise. No hop aroma. Medium-light bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel with a thin, flabby texture. Too drinkable, in that the richness of malt is completely lost to me. A faint coffee-tinged roast malt flavor lingers on the palate, but there isn’t a richness of underlying malt character to support it, so it ends up tasting a little bit limp. Watery, with a hint of roast. A rare disappointment from a brewery that usually delivers a great example of a US generated traditional German lager style.
