2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Slick (1971) - Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA - MAY 25, 2003
Very nice dark brown color.Tall tan head that takes some time to fade.Very nice dark roasted malt aroma, slight hops presence with a small hint of spice. The taste was a little thin slightly malty, mildly sweet, with a mellow hop presence and the spice didn't make a presence at all.the malt and mild hopping does show up in the after taste but little else after that. This is not a bad brew just a little weak and could use a little more work to put it over the edge.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 dev (50) - Savannah, Missouri, USA - APR 8, 2003
Thick long lasting foamy tan head with same color lace all the way down. Dark brown coca cola color.Tiny bubble carbonation. Smell of chocolate, yeast and banana. Moderate hop bitterness, chocolate, banana, semi sweet flavor. Alcohol presence unmistakable. Slight bitter aftertaste. Heavy and semi thick. Quite a different experience.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Silphium (2718) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - APR 3, 2003
I am just now noticing the description: "without a doubt the finest dark beer brewed in the United States."
LOL. I certainly hope not, although Munich Dark is respectable in most regards. Pours amber, with a weak aroma and a nice, malty taste which quickly dissipates. The body is a bit too thin for this beer to be considered "the finest in the United States," and the flavor lacks the degree of complexity and persistence that the unfortunate description implies. Still, a respectable beverage, but I'll stick to my European counterparts for this style.
3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 urbnhautebourg (997) - Annapolis, Maryland, USA - MAR 9, 2003
Great, full dark malt aroma with some hop spice. Unfortunately, the flavor doesn't deliver on the promise of the aroma. A little thin and just lacking in malt flavor.
3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 LiebeBier (805) - Annapolis, Maryland, USA - MAR 8, 2003
Very rich and maty aroma. It smells great, but doesn't taste as goos as it smells. If it had more body this might be a classic.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jskendzel (602) - Washington DC, USA - FEB 24, 2003
Very nice malt backbone, as is typical for many of the German beers from this brewery. Caramel and a decent amount of hops. Very smooth and well done.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 JPDIPSO (4957) - Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 10, 2003
Chestnut color with a beige moderate head. Malthouse and brewhouse malt aromas. Smooth and malty. I have had this in the past and do not recall it being this malty. Very dry finish, with just a touch of hops bite. I'm going to look for this one on tap.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 redlem (1213) - Ohio, USA - FEB 9, 2003
Very smooth. Dark brown in color with a big tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, with some nut/chocolate undertones, enticing. Taste is smooth, nice roasted malts. Has none of the skunk smell or taste of the imports, this is far superior.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 Frank (2058) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 22, 2003
A very good dunkel and with less danger of skunkiness than the imported stuff. Typically for the style, the focus here is on malt. Pleasantly sweet with a bit of chocolate, nuts, and burnt sugar. Rounded out with a bit of spicy hops. Has an interesting melt-in-your-mouth finish. Really one of the best examples of this style.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 howie (549) - DeForest, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 30, 2002
rich and tasty, very well balanced.
