COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Without a doubt the finest dark beer brewed in the United States. Styled after a traditional Munchener-Dunkel, Dark is a rich, delicious beer combined with excellent drinkability - a rare combination.

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2003 Bottled. Reading these other descriptions, I wonder just what was in my bottle. Color was fine, head foamed up but dissipated quickly. I caught a big whiff of sorghum & molasses, like you get when you brew with a dark malt extract. Couldn't find roast malt notes at all. But then the other dark lagers I've tried lately have been very lacking in uniformity, so maybe this is closer to style than I realize. Eminently enjoyable, but not what I expected.
Re-rated; Draft. From the tap it comes off somewhat better; a decent dark roast taste. I think I almost an allergic reaction from the hop nose?

Draft. Deep brown body with an off-white head. Malty aroma of caramel, molasses, cookie, nuts. Light floral note. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Mostly sweet malts in the taste, though lingering bitterness helps cut that in the finish. Some raw graininess. Enjoyable.

Pours a dark reddish brown - a solidly made dunkel - roasted nuts, toffee, and dark bread throughout, with balancing a acidity, mild bitterness, and an earthy, leafy character - full, creamy texture - crusty pumpernickel finish - solid.

Reddish brown is the pour on this one, with off-white colored head. Lots of rich bready notes on the nose. Caramel and bread on the palate. Finishes with just a hint of hops.

Bottle. Sweet brown bread barley malt aroma. Clear dark brown with a very large beige head. Toasty brown bread/barley malt flavor with a light bitter finish. Medium body, soft carbonation.

Ruby color with a lacing tan head. Aroma is full of roasted malt, slight toffee and caramel, and cream. Taste is moderately sweet with a strong body and an oily finish. Great great beer.

Pours a clear dark garnet/brown with an initially big off white head that diminished rather quickly. Aroma is roasted malt and cocoa. Taste is sweet roasted malt along with some buttery biscuits, coffee and mild bitterness. Very goo9d, but I disagree with the product description. The FINEST dunkel brewed in the United States is made at the Hofbrauhaus in Newport, KY.

Sweet molasses with a touch of smoke appears in the aroma with more complexity in flavor. While malt is the dominant element, hops also make a contribution. Hops add a touch of chalkiness to the mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber brown with no head. Nose is roasted malt and caramel. Taste is light with malt and some hints of chocolate. Not a lager lover but this was drinkable with some flavor. Finish is short, and light. Quaff Score ( from an ale drinker ) 6 / 10
