COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Without a doubt the finest dark beer brewed in the United States. Styled after a traditional Munchener-Dunkel, Dark is a rich, delicious beer combined with excellent drinkability - a rare combination.

Appearance: Pours a deep, dark brown with a good head. Wonderful lacing. Aroma: The aroma really blossoms as it sits a couple minutes. Deep and malty, hints of raisin. Flavor: Very malt forward beer with subtle hop balance. Raisin and plum fruitiness balance a pleasant bitterness. Lingering finish. Mouthfeel: Clean, medium bodied beer. Goes down easy and before you know it, you’re ready for the next sip. We had the pleasure of meeting head brewer Kirby Nelson at Steve’s Liqours, where he was promoting some winter beers and offering tastings. He’s a fantastically nice fellow, and a Zappa fan (he names all their fermenters after Zappa songs - pics coming). Having studied with a German lager master, this beer definitely plays to Kirby’s strong points. Highly recommended.

Dark brown with red highlights, small off-white head. Dark lager aroma with lots of roast, a bit of smoke, and some very subtle nobel hops. The flavor is a tad sweet at first, with toasted malts, then, a burst of carbonation brings balancing hops that clean it all up. Crisp, almost dry finish with lingering toast. Pretty solid.

Bottle. Dark amber pour with a smaller white head. Aroma is bready malts with some roastiness - very nice. Medium to lighter palate. Taste is also caramel malt, with a touch of roast and chocolate. Very enjoyable and easy drinking.

The aroma of this is malts and grainy. The flavor is malty with some grainy sweetness. Overall this was solid dunkel, easy to drink, not very complex but still very good.

On tap at the Capital Brewery Tap Haus. I don’t typically drink dark beers, but I ordered a flight (4 small glasses) and this one was easily my favorite. Dark amber color, medium body, creamy - great blend not too sweet or too bitter.

This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.

Bottle, labeled as "Capital Dark". Pour is a clear brown with heavy red copper highlights Decent though somewhat sickly color head, ok retention, ok lacing. Aroma is of bready caramel malts, some wet malt, light yeast. Ok. Taste has much the same dominating flavors, perhaps a bit of roast and just a touch of chocolate. Palate is slightly thin. Not a bad beer, easy drinking, but really nothing standout about it.

Pours deep red with small brown head. Nose is malty sweet with heavy notes of caramel, nuts, toffee, and rich bread. Taste is nutty, breads, medium sweetness, toffee flavor but not cloying or overly sweet. Mouth feel creamy but not thick, and smooth with light carbonation. Really pretty enjoyable.

Bottle pours clear medium brown with moderate bubbly off-white head. Aroma sweet, toffee. Taste caramel, toffee, malts, bread with a touch of roast. Finish mild and roasty. Palate carbonated, a bit thin. Alcohol not apparent. Nice solid dunkel. Easy drinking, would go well with a meal.

Decent dunkel. Capital can be hit or miss with their German-styled lagers, this one is middle of the road, however.

Pours a mahogany brown with a creamy tan head and lots of effervesence. Nose is toffee and chocolate. Very creamy on the palate. Nicely balanced brew with hints of toffee, chocolate, caramel and vanilla. No bitterness noted. A pleasant brew that both looks and tastes good. Pairs well with pretzels or pastrami on rye.
