4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 whitebear (41) - - APR 14, 2012Overall another great example of dopplebock with mild to little bittering and no hop flavor. Something of a unique tale that they will be using half of the brewed batch in future annual releases. This is something of a nice malty sweetness that is candy to the beer drinker.

Pours a clear amber bronze with a stringy-lacing white head. Has a slightly tart fruity estery nose with some toasted caramel malty notes. Starts with pretty good fullness and sweet dark caramel maltiness with some noble hop bitterness before a drier slightly warming finish. Could be a little smoother.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Guerde (1074) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - FEB 20, 2013
(bottle) Pours a clear red color with a very thin off-white head that does retain throughout consumption. Aroma is full of assorted dried fruits, with cherries, prunes, and raisins rising above everything else. The cherry flavor veers towards maraschino territory with further warming along with some snap pea. Weird. Could be some caramel and a bit of musty lager yeast, but not much besides that. The flavor follows suit with the aroma, but it’s a bit more dialed back, with the cherry again being the feature flavor, followed by some prune and raisin. Caramel and brown sugar make an appearance here, and the flavors intensify the more this warms. Starts to taste a bit like Dr. Pepper. Faint hint of graham cracker on the finish. This drinks incredibly well for a 9% beer, and the alcohol is never noticeable. Overall not a bad beer.
