UPDATED: AUG 4, 2010 On tap at the brewery - Excited to try this one, but pretty let down by it. Pours a clear mahogany, with a small tan head. Smells big and malty with lots of caramel and light, spicy hops. Taste is light, roasted malt, with a sticky sweetness and some heat. Flavor is much less malty than the smell--kind of weird. The whole thing tastes a bit off balance, with tons of sweet malt and syrupy sweetness.

Aroma is malts, almost similar to an American Oktoberfest. The flavor is caramel, decent malts, mildly nutty and for a doppelbock, pretty hoppy in the finish. Not a traditional doppelbock, a nice deviation on the style.

12 ounce bottle from Steve’s Mineral Point in Madison. Pours a clear copper color with a thin fizzy off-white head that fades quickly. Aroma of toasted malts, raisin and floral hops. The taste is bitter herbal hops, raisin, grape, toffee, pale malts. Medium bodied. Decent beer.

12 oz bottle pours a light copper color with a small light head. Aroma is not what I would expect from a doppelbock: spicy, toffee, and a bit of noble hops and maybe even dark fruit. Medium body and a taste that is sweeter instead of maltier. Finish is long and dry. Nothing bad, but not what I would call bock or doppelbock. At least it was on sale for <$2/bottle.

Draft at Dexters. Filtered glowing orange-brown. Big, steady yellowed beige head. Sweet, mellow aroma. Somewhat odd taste, not really capturing the style. Some peppery hop tones and a sweet malty undertone. Maple, caramel, cinnamon. Drinkable, but not impressive.

Bottle from Riley’s. "The art of the dopplebock" belongs to Capital. This is an example of this charm. Dark brown with little head, I placed it in a De Koninck glass. Malty, yeasty, cocoa aroma. A tad above average mouthfeel yields a rich and complex malting. Very satisfying, very drinkable.

Bottle says 8.0%abv. Pours a clear, dark amber with a 1 finger, creamy beige head that has good retention. Aroma is of caramel, crusty white bread, planty, floral, spicy and fruity hops. Really quite hoppy in the nose for a doppelbock, more so than I expected even after reading the description. Flavor is toast, caramel, white bread toast, some cereal grain and some floral, spicy, and fruity hops, there’s an odd taste at the finish, sort of a planty hop note that I usually attribute to Fuggles hops. Palate is medium bodied, creamy and slick on entry, leading to an off dry finish that has a slightly slick, yet chalky feel. There are a couple of off notes with this, but I definitely enjoyed it. It kind of ended up being one of those beers that I enjoy a little less as I am critiquing a bottle than I would if I were just drinking for the sake of drinking.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear light coppery amber with a medium sized cream colored head. Aroma of malt, dark fruit notes and toffee. Taste is much the same as the aroma.

Quite dry and potently hoppy for a Doppel - has the creamy body, smooth mouthfeel, light esters and moderate caramel character, but there is some odd oxidation, strong noble hop character and mild acidity that really throw it off the style - once you adjust, it isn’t that bad, but the elements never really come together - at over 3 bucks a 12 ounce, this is so not worth it.

12oz bottle 6/19/11 (Binny’s Plainfield Singles Rack)-48° in Stem Glass. Pours brunette with a two finger off white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, toffee, bread, and dark fruit. Taste of malt, hops, and caramel. This full bodied brew finishes with a nice bitterness. A nice tasting brew.
