On tap in fall 2008: Pours a transparent dark mahogany with ruby hues and a frothy, well-lacing beige head. Aroma of lightly sweet and roasty dark malts with some grainy character and a hint of noble hops. Body starts with good fullness and carbonation with a grainy dark malty sweetness and some mild bitter balance. Has a lingering roasty coffee finish. Pretty true to style and drinkable.

On cask at the Shirlington location. Pour was typical for the style although the color wasn’t as deep and black as I was anticipating, more on the dark brown side of things. The aroma was chocolate cocoa and some licorice. The flavor followed the aroma with some cocoa chocolate, licorice and munich type malts mixed in underneath to the point where this pulled up just short of the depth of a schwarz, getting stuck in between a dunkel and schwarzbier? Mouthfeel was malty but semi-dry, fairly drinkable.

Cask at the Shirlington location. Clear, dark brown with a beige head that lasts to the bottom, somehow leaving no lace. Roasty and lightly smoky nose, a bit nutty. Mild flavor, roasty, light charcoal, caramel. A rather drinkable Schwarz, but nothing spectacular.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 nimbleprop (2226) - SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA - OCT 17, 2008
On draft at the 11th Street location in downtown DC. Pours a transparent dark brown with a whispy white head. Aroma of toasted malts, some fruitiness, grains. Flavor has more of the same, toasted grains, caramel. Thin on the tongue. Seems like a watered down version of their Prohibition Porter. It was drinkable and a decent session beer but nothing extraordinary.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 10/20 fiulijn (10383) - Como, ITALY - OCT 13, 2008
Draught at the brewpub, downtown Dark brown color. It has some aroma of roasted cereals. The flavors presents as well roasted cereals, covering some caramel, in a rather dry mouthfeel. Unfortunately there is an undertone of burnt coffee and ashes too, that pollutes the final.
