COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A truly unique beer combining the best brewing traditions of Belgium with the natural goodness of manuka leaves, fresh picked from the native forests of New Zealand. When Cpt. James Cook first landed in New Zealand over 200 years ago, he brewed a beer using the leaves of the manuka tree in a quest to protect the health of his crew from vitamin C deficiency. Little did he know that the indigenous Maori people had been using manuka for centuries for its health giving properties. In 1996 the Mussel Inn refined Cook's original recipe and has since been harvesting fresh manuka from the surrounding hills to produce a beer of unique flavour and quality. Today, the same beer is being brewed in Belgium using the best of its brewing techniques and the same manuka leaves from New Zealand.

MiP (11783) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - JUN 25, 2007
Bottle, 5.7% at KØ07. The aroma is spicy, reminding me of ginger, but I guess it is the manuka. Hazy copper colour. The flavour is much like the aroma, with a slightly sweet finish. Thin mouthfeel.

(Bottle 33 cl) Clear, amber golden with an off-white head. Spicy, gingery nose. Medium-bodied with a fairly high carbonation, lightly sweet caramel with distinct notes of ginger - well, it must be the manuka leaves. Subdued bitterness. 130507

Bottled. Very spicey aroma, not fresh spices but more like overcooked soupe. Amber color, beige head, fair lace. Perfume, spice, light malty, thinnish. Spices are unbalanced, too overwhelming and just don’t go with beer too well.

CapedBrewsader (266) - Brasschaat, BELGIUM - MAY 2, 2007
UPDATED: MAY 15, 2007 A hazy orange sunset fills the glass, under a huge billowing cream colored cloud, that quickly dissolves to a more modest head. Big herbacious aroma, blasting your nose in waves of fresh cut flowers, peach, sage, and lemon peel. The Herbs eventually blow away and leave your nostrils feeling refreshed with lemon, ginger, and light tropical fruits. So light on malt aroma that you forget this is a beer, and your mind is off travelling the ocean with Captain Cook himself. Once it passes your lips you are brought back to reality while you puzzle through the flavors running rampant around your tongue. Orange blossom water, rose water, lemon, ginger, and peach all coming and going at the same time, finishing off with tea... and possibly slight hop flavor? Quite refreshing and light, but not so light that it seems weak. Captain Cooker probably won’t become part of my "usual suspects" but it is indeed an interesting beer. I am sure we will cross paths again somewhere in this big sea of beer.
