COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A truly unique beer combining the best brewing traditions of Belgium with the natural goodness of manuka leaves, fresh picked from the native forests of New Zealand. When Cpt. James Cook first landed in New Zealand over 200 years ago, he brewed a beer using the leaves of the manuka tree in a quest to protect the health of his crew from vitamin C deficiency. Little did he know that the indigenous Maori people had been using manuka for centuries for its health giving properties. In 1996 the Mussel Inn refined Cook's original recipe and has since been harvesting fresh manuka from the surrounding hills to produce a beer of unique flavour and quality. Today, the same beer is being brewed in Belgium using the best of its brewing techniques and the same manuka leaves from New Zealand.

Bottled. Amber coloured. Unclear. Frothy beige head. Aroma of spice, light herbs, some sweetness, fruits and light yeast. Quite delicious. Flavour is a bit more bland than aroma. Sweetness, spice, light yeast and the fruits again Is medium bodied. Light dry. Spicy applish end

33cl bottle.

from backlog

Head: white, bubbly
Colour: dark amber
Smell: herby, special, citric, fresh
Taste: the spices really give it a weird special taste, but it’s drinkable , unlike the captain cooker white one ... bit dry with a bit of sourness ...

Grima (1572) - Saarburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, GERMANY - APR 20, 2011
Bright reddish beer with a high, fine-pored head. The smell is very promising. Sweet malty, very very spicy. Smells like a very good german Dunkles! The beer starts pleasantly malty, spicy and overall with a very lively carbonation. The finish shows something slightly sweet and roasty. The spicy note dominates even after a very long time. Wonderful beer!

A bit odd with those spices, but nothing undrinkable. Too bad it’s not made in New Zealand itself.

Warning! Early amateur rating! A darkish beer. Unusual. The Manuka leaves appear to impart a limey mint flavour and cooling aftertaste. Moorish and tasty.

Bottled. A hazy yellow wit-looking beer which gushed on opening but produced an average sized off-white head. There is an odd herbal note amongst the wheaty flavours. Coriander is prevalent in the nose and there’s a cinnamon like spiciness in the mouth. It’s unusual but is absolutely fine.
