4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 ineedbeer (181) - San Leandro, California, USA - APR 24, 2013
Aroma has a very nice malty complexity to it. Light chocolate, low toast, dark caramel and some nuts are all present. Some light dark fruit notes of prune. More toasted bread aromas as it warms.
Pours a slightly cloudy brown with hints of burnt amber. Thick, light tab head that quickly recedes leaving a small film on top and along the edges.
Flavor is very malt forward with quite a bit of light chocolate and toffee notes. Some toasted bread character but less than in the aroma. Dark caramel and some tree nuts compliment the chocolate. Not much fruit or hops in the flavor. Medium light bitterness with some toast in the finish. As it warms the prune and some cherry becomes more evident in the flavor.
Mouthfeel is medium to medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth.
Overall a very malt forward brown ale. I find this beer to be very enjoyable with good complexity in the way the toast, chocolate and caramel interact.

Reviewed 2-28-13
Poured from 12oz bottle into shaker
Appearance: Pours a dark brown, somewhat transparent. Small off-white head (fleeting).
Aroma: Slight toffee, caramel. A touch of roast, but not much.
Taste: Sweet maltiness with malt roast throughout. Slight hop presence. Flavors seem somewhat muted, boring.
Mouthfeel: Thin. Slight carbonation.
Overall: This is a boring, safe beer. Obviously, that comes with the territory of the style, but this beer does nothing to separate itself from the pack. The only saving grace to this beer is high drinkability, but that doesn’t warrant it anything higher than a 6 from me.

Appearance was clear reddish brown with creamy lasting off white 1 finger head, spotty lacing. Aromas are simple sweet malts with English yeast profile and hints of nut and hops. Taste are toffee, caramel, nutty malts, yeasty cake with hints of lemony pine hops. Palate was soft smooth CO2 with medium body, average length brownish tick of dry finish. Could have fuller malt profile...
