This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren’t afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain’s Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Poured into pint glass from bottle: pours golden with a one finger white head. Arima of citrus, pine, earthy, grapes. Taste us pine followed by tropical fruit and bitter hoppyness. Medium body, a bit astringent, pretty tasty!

Pours a nice golden color with a finger of sticky foam. The nose is round hops, citrus, grass, heavy sticky malt presence and a bit of dank earth. The palate follows the nose and has some decent citrus undertones but the mouthfeel is like jello and there is a heavy stale grass presence that is underwhelming and gets worse as the flavors linger.

11/I/14 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle @ JorisPPattyn’s place - probably 2010 or 2011 vintage (2014-30) Thanks to Joris for sharing the bottle!

Little hazy blond beer, irregular off-white head, little stable, pretty adhesive. Aroma: some honey, sweet, bit floral, dried peaches, sugary, little spicy. MF: ok carbon, full body. Taste: sweet start, bit sugary, honey, citrus, some sweet exotic fruits, pineapple, passion fruit, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: honey, pretty sweet, very fruity, lots of citrus, grapefruit, soft bitterness. Very nice! Never had a double IPA of this age that held up so well!

UPDATED: NOV 12, 2013 Bottle. Sampling session at Lefty’s. Nice mix of pine and citrus, and some stinky fruitiness. Light grapefruit and some sweet peach / mid balances very well / finish is tasty and full of gentle bitterness. Medium body. Bit of a hop bomb at first, but goes milder quickly with a lovely range of fruit.

At a tasting at KyotoLefty’s place. A straw gold with a filmy head, powerful aroma of citrus with a touch of pine. A medium to full body with an ascerbic, bitter, hoppy... kind of stinky tropical fruits, citrus & pine. A solid IPA, not so complex but good & not too boozy.

A: Mildly Hazy Golden Straw Hue, Passes A Lot of Light, White Head Ring, Decent Lacing S: Floral, Piney, Mild Malts T: Piney, Resin, Mild Grapefruit M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Bitter, Dry Overall, this would be a great IPA but they list it as a DIPA and it kind of lacks from that aspect. Good but not great.
