This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who arenít afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captainís Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Growler, via BA gpcollen1. Pours a nice copper body with a foamy one finger off-white head that slowly settled to a thin ring. No lacing. The nose is fairly aggressive citrusy hops, but not as intense as many IIPAs. Minimal malt impact on the nose. The flavor is pretty well balanced for an IIPA, nice fresh citrusy and lightly piney hops take control, but never become overly bitter. The malt breaks thru the bitterness on the finish, but itís strictly there as a trellis for all these hops. Mouthfeel is slightly sticky resiny hoppiness that clings to the sides of the mouth nicely with a very soft gentle carbonation level. Overall, this was what Iíd consider a "sessionable" IIPA, it wasnít trying to overpower your senses and just give you a boatload of hops. Nice work CL!

From a handbottled 22 via MrBendo, bomber in great shape. Nice and appropriate carbonation level, hanging around. Wonderful medium dark bronze color. Slippery, oily and sticky palate. Intense pine, sappy aroma. Astringent hop flavors of pine and grapefruit, some toasted bread, some tropical-type sugars. The sugars donít offset the bitterness too much which is a common complaint for me about Double IPAs. Very good, not my fave style but I had to try this version. All in all a very good, very balanced and not overly sweet DIPA. Goes well with Boarís Head Rosemary and Sun-Dried Tomato Ham.

On tap, Gingerman, NYC. Really nice citrus aroma. Dark orange, good sized white head. Malty taste with a ton of pine like hops. Very warming alcohol. Tons of hops yet balanced, a superb DIPA - warmed my chilly rain soaked bones on Feb 1 2008.

Slightly hazy amber/orange. Aroma of grapefruit and pineapple. West coast balanced. Finish is bitter and biting in your throat. A pretty good West Coast DIPA, but not among the outstanding.

Growler provided by kmweaver. Hazy amber body with a small white head. Sugary caramel malt nose with citrus and pine. The flavor is moderately sweet with caramel, cotton candy and bread. Medium/full body is round and chewy with moderate carbonation.

Growler, courtesy of yobdoog. Thanks, Trevor! Pours a clear, bright golden-orange color; white head with fine-bubbled lacing. Good amounts of chewy citrus and earthiness in the aroma; dense, singular. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: relaxed carbonation; resiny, chewy citrus and earthy hops upfront; pleasant amounts of balancing candy sugar and wet malts; tasty, balanced, and very drinkable. Some tropical fruits coming through. A solid, resinous IIPA. Lengthy, sugar, citrus and earthy hops in the finish.

Draft at Ginger Man, NYC. This struck me as the stereotype of a double IPA ó big citrus flavor and lots of bitterness. Dark orange body with little head, but what is there is off-white. The aroma is filled with grapefruit, resin, pine and orange peel. There is a slight hint of grain, perhaps warm bread, in the background. The flavor is moderately to heavily bitter and lightly sweet. Alcoholic warmth starts to creep in after two or three sips. Medium body and watery texture with average carbonation. Nice sensation of smoothness followed by raspy bitterness.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma glows of resin and total coalescence of resins, sap, and light Mexican incense. Very refined. Pours in orange light translucency and a syrupy white head. Flavor becomes big in pineapple stem, persimmon seeds, and loblolly pine roots. Very fresh and glowing. Alcohol stays very quiet. Heads into that hop combination of breadiness and warmth from an otherly place. What Iím looking for and what I find is excellent hop utilization for flavor and aroma, as opposed to developing all sorts of lawnmower bitterness along the way. This beer certainly has a very developed and articulate hop profile, making it totally enjoyable. If anything it could use some more definition at certain areas and maybe a touch more malt nuance, but itís really quite nice.

Growler filled courtesy of Goldtwins. Pours a deep red/orange body with a somewhat sticky, off-white head. Big grappefruit and pineapple aroma. Flavor is syrupy pinapple and oranges with a big grapefruit and pine needle kick that takes over through the finish.
