This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who arenít afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captainís Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

This is a very nice double IPA, kind of a variation of a West Coast IPA. I wonít hesitate to put this into my rotation of IPAs and double IPAs going forward with Firestone Walker Double Jack, Sierra Nevada Hoptimum, etc. If you like double IPAs or pale ales, you canít go wrong here.

Pours a golden orange with a large lasting off white head with good lacing. Sweet caramel malt, earthy herbal and pine hops along with some mellow citrus notes fill the senses and taste buds. a medium to full body, smooth with moderate carbonation. Has a good caramel malt background with good earthy herbal hops and citrus notes for balance on the end, has bit of a hop kick at the end. A very good, smooth drinking and tasty brew.

Reviewed 9-9-10 There was a Captain Lawrence tasting over at Pizza Paradiso in DC a couple of months about and I missed it... Drat! I really wanted to be there because I had never sampled a CL product before. Last week, I was in "Connecticut Ave. Wine, Liquor, & Deli" and found this gem. Funny...I never even knew the area got CL products. Then again, I guess DC can get anything. The bottle looked fresh (no dust, on the front row, etc.), so I grabbed it and here we are: A: Medium Yellow-orange color, with about 1/2 inch head, which became foamier after subsequent pours. That sucker lingered throughout the session - Yikes! T: Pretty sweet, which muted some of the grapefruit bitterness. Maybe a little bit of peach? Very flavorful! M: Coats the mouth pretty heavily, and starts to overstay its welcome a bit towards the end. I kept a glass of water handy. D: I had no trouble finishing the bottle, although the intense syrupiness was a bit much. But hey....this is a reserve beer with a 9% ABV. What was I expecting?...a Dortmunder? Overall, a delicious beer session!

Amber pour with a big off-white head. Citrus, pine, and a little booze aroma. Super smooth, bitter and clean. Excellent brew.

500 ml bottle thanks to blklab2007. Bottled 6/12/13. Pours a clear light amber color with a big pillowy head that fades slowly and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is slightly musty hops, lots of oranges, grapefruit, flowers, and pineapple. Taste is fresh juicy hops. Very fruity up front and finishes floral and piney. Moderately sweet with a strong bitterness. Nice malty backbone too. Medium to thick body, oily mouthfeel. Really enjoyed this one.

Hoppy aroma, mix between floral citrus hop aroma and piney hop aroma. Taste is more on the bitter side than citrus. Full flavored and well balanced. Maybe a bit thick on the palate? Would have rated this higher before having Heady Topper, but that ipa is quite a bit better. Still a very solid ipa though! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a light orange. Has a strong floral hop aroma. Has an immediate light taste that turns strong floral (rose) and then lingers with a bit of floral hops, but not overpowering.

Bottle from growler and gill. Pours with a slight orange tint and an inch of white foam. Does leave some lacing in the glass. Has a bit of citrus on the nose. Itís a bit fruity on the tongue and finishes with a burst of bitterness. Well balanced and hides its alcohol well. Flavorful. This beer is growing on me by the swallow.

Yet another goody brought back from the trip to NYC. I always love getting awesome IIPAís because there is no temptation to save them. Pours a hazy yellow with a white head. Scent is citrus and honey. Flavor is a touch grassy, which I normally donít like, but enjoyed in this beer. Excellent level of bitterness. Well carbonated.
