COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren’t afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain’s Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

One of Better imperial IPA I?ve had. The aroma is very hoppy with just a hint of sweet. Great flavor, balanced palate, light on the after taste so you?ll want more.

Bue à la pression. Couleur dorée, trouble. Assez douce dans l’ensemble, on ne sent l’amère que sur la finale, plutôt sèche du coup.

Sampled at AC Beerfest (2014). Poured a hazy light orange color with a nice foamy off white head. Aroma of sweet citrus, bread crust, citrus zest, and pine. Taste is much the same with a stronger caramel malt backbone coming through.

Pour is a lightly hazed golden yellow with lots of white head and some large bubbles. Nose is heavy bready malt and caramel. Hints of hop but very faint. Either completely old extra or just a rough nose. Taste is much of the same, provides a bit more resin and pine hop. Still not hop forward. Not very good.

Ljus med mycket bra doft. Tyvärr så slår alkoholsmaken igenom så att detcsänker betyget en hel del. Smaken är söt med kolatoner med bra beska.

On-tap at Joe Canals West Deptford.
Appearance: Slightly hazy golden orange with a thin off-white head. The head settles to a very thin coating with a creamy ring.
Aroma: Big overripe mango, sweet orange and hints of pine. The aroma is very clean with good strength.
Taste: Big fruitiness from the hops, mango, pineapple and oranges come to mind with a hint of grapefruit. Lots of flavor! The bitterness is mild and the malt base is rather simple but matches the bitterness. Grapefruit and floral notes linger for a moment.
Palate: Full-bodied, mild to moderate carbonation.
Overall: A very very nice imperial IPA. A great amount of flavor and balance along with a hop profile I can agree with. The price would be a bit pricey looking at a 4 pack, but it’s a good value considering the size. I would take this over any Maine Beer Co. IPA for instance. Well done.

500 ml bottle. Pours golden with tall, long lasting, fluffy white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of citrusy, piney, spicey hops, ripe fruit and bready malt. Body is full and tangy. Citrusy, piney, herbal hops dominate the palate while bready malt and tropical fruit provide some balance. Finish is long and very dry. Outstanding brew.

Bottled on 12/31/13, drunk 2/19/14, from Half Time
Leaving the near inch of sediment at the bottom, the beer pours a beautifully bright amber-tinged golden with a small white head and plentiful (bottle-conditioned?) carbonation rising to produce moderate retention.
Huge juicy fruit nose has moderately sweet pale malts backing it, with more red grapefruit and oranges emerging with warming. Seems like a good dose of simcoe, cascade, maybe citra. Lots of the citrusy/tropical variety, though tending more citrusy. Lighter on the pine and thankfully no alcohol fumes (though it’s still fairly well-chilled at this point).
More citrus and tropical fruits in the flavor are very well-integrated with the nicely rich, balancing pale malts, leading to candied orange, apricot jam and light cherry and ruby red grapefruit. Wonderfully deep hop profile. The carbonation is light, but rather tight and creamy, giving the beer a very comforting texture and lending drinkability. Some hop acids build up on the finish, drying the palate and leaving some light astringency. The flavor dosent linger all that long, due in part to some wateriness and also the acidity.
That initial juicy, tropical fruit flavor mixed with the sweet malts is enough to make me keep drinking, but it does begin to fatigue the palate, and all that with this being well-chilled to start. Still, it’s delightfully clean thanks to all that yeast on the bottom and I’m not going to complain too much, as I have an admittedly low tolerance for hop acidity.
