This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who arenít afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captainís Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

This beer is growing on me. This is the second bottle that Iíve sampled and it really seems to be a laid back, charming, unapologetic one trick pony. Smells really bitter and floral and thatís exactly what comes through in the taste as well. Whatcha got here is a sweet and earthy flower petal sandwich with a load of hop resin slaw. At the finish I get something bitter, spicy and earthy like horseradish root or something, no joke. Mouthfeel is thin in body but coating. Reminds me much more of an IPA than a double but a nice brew. Thanks Captain Lawrence. 2009 16 oz.

Hard to ut my finger on whatís going on here. This hazy amber brew is really sweet. Itís missing that bite of an imperial IPA. It taste like orange, citrus and sweet íní low with a dash of malt to help hold it up. Has a bit of the alcohol finish. Strange beer. Would like to try one on tap...

Sampled at GABF on 9/17/2010. This Imperial India Pale Ale pours a light gold color from the tap. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, touch of floral hops. A medium bodied double IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are citrusy and grapefruity. Not a lot of bitterness, especially for an double IPA, nice hop flavors with some bitterness at the finish. Decnet carbonation. Nice balance. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden yellow with a small white fizzy head. Aroma is of pine, citrus and some tropical fruits. Quite bitter, not a lot of malt sweetness to be found. A bit too light bodied for me, and the carbonation was a bit too fizzy. Quite one dimensional, it lacks a little punch. A good drink though.

This was decent, but not remarkable DIPA. Great hop nose and aroma, but the body was sort of bitter and flat. Also it suffers from being sort of heavy in the body, which I donít like for my hoppy beers.

Bottle, thanks to rlgk. Pours hazy amber with a small bubbly beige head leaving lace. Aroma is sweet, malty, phenolic and fruity. Flavor is more to BW than DIPA, maybe the bottle has been on the store shelf for a long tme. Still drinkable though. Finishes bitter sweet.
