COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren’t afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain’s Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

Poured in a St Bernardus chalice. Pours gold with small head and lace. Aroma of sweet malts and straw hops. Medium carbonation and significant mouthfeel. Flavors of straw and hay hops, rich malts. Overall big bold and bitter.

Reviewed from notes. This one was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a nice hazy golden color with a one and a half finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute. The lacing coats the sides of the glass nicely and ends up following the beer in a nice gentle slide. The smell had a nice conglomeration of spicy and sweet citrusy to grapefruity hops to lead to a pretty nice sweet malt background. The taste took all of those flavors to combine very nicely and let it settle into a dry finish with no aftertaste. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionable aspect about it. Overall, pretty good DIPA worthy of having again. Wow! Great beer. Found this gem my last day on vacation to NY/NJ. Pretty much a perfectly balanced IIPA. Only knock(and it's minor and just a personal preference) is the alcohol is not very hidden and a little to upfront for an 8% IIPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Captain Lawrence Captains reserve Imperial ipa 9% ABV APPEARANCE: Poured a star bright golden hay color. A great billowing fluffy off white head that continued to grow until I had to sip it down. Nice retention and wonderful lacing patterns. AROMA: As I was pouring I got hit with a huge whiff of dank, marijuana like hops. When I got my nose into the glass it went past that and really started getting the tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, grapefruit and fresh squeezed orange juice. Picking up a just put out cigar note, smokey and interesting not used to this nose on a dipa. TASTE: Huge wave of bitterness right off the bat that gets instantly balanced out by candied fruits. Some biscuity, bready malts peak in the middle and finishes with a great grassy, pine hoppy deliciousness. MOUTHFEEL: Medium body and medium carbonation both appropriate for the style. The 9% ABV is hidden very nice and the dry hoppy finish literately leaves my mouth dry and thirsty for more. OVERALL: In general I'm more of a west coast ipa fan then east due to the usual heavy malt flavor on the east coast ipa's. But this one just balances out so well, super solid and enjoyable. My first from captain Lawrence and overall I was very impressed. I would recommend this to any dipa lovers. RATING: 4.4/5 Zombie Heads! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

16oz bottle, thanks to Mike L. for sharing! Hazy golden, slight orange color. Thin ring of white head. Leaves loose lace. Medium-plus body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Kind of a piney, soapy hop character. Moderate bitter, light tart. Some citrusy hop. Light caramel malt, and some bigger yeast influence. Some metallic on the back end. OK imperial IPA for me, not my favorite. Possibly not fresh? Tastes a little off. Interesting to try ~3oz of, but a whole bottle would have been a drag. ... Turns out this was bottled 11/18/2013, I went back to check out the date (it was picked up fresh from a store shelf less than a month ago).

Bottle pour. Murky orange. Restrained, white head. Aroma is clearly that of a strong IPA, but with an unexpected warmth contributed by the pale malts. Very grassy flavor with dandelion and a floral spiciness. Some orange esters and caramel sweetness round out the taste. Concise and well executed. Dry finish. High-ish ABV does not detract.

500 ml bottle from Premier Gourmet. Pours a lightly cloudy golden colour with average, lasting white head. Aroma is rather resiny with some light citric notes and some bready, caramel malt. Flavour is dank and resiny with hints of citric hops and a solid bready and caramelly backbone. Plus sized body. Nice, though I’d love to try a really fresh bottle.

Bottle from a local shop. Aroma is orange peel, grapefruit feel, and light resin/malt. Pours slightly hazy and amber with a nice big sticky head, the kind that sticks to the glass. Taste is citrussy and sweet with apricot, grapefruit and a nice sticky malt back. This one was bottled about three months ago so I’m curious to see how amazing this would be fresh. Very enjoyable.

Pours a hazy pale yellow, thick stuff... White mid size head. Aroma is grapefruit, citra, piney hop, grass. Taste is super gooey fruits, dank hop resin, sweet malt but good balance. Pretty solid stuff, med mouthfeel... Juicy/gooey fruit and hops, finishes full of citrus hop. Nice

Bue à la pression. Couleur dorée, trouble. Assez douce dans l’ensemble, on ne sent l’amère que sur la finale, plutôt sèche du coup.
