vyvvy (1582), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Apr 18, 2008 Big thanks to the STL crew for sharing this brew. Pours hazy amber with suspended floaties and a white head. The aroma is a nice mix of liquor and beer with neither overwhelming the other. There is brandy, coconut, apples, light cinnamon and dry-tripel malt. Medium smooth body that’s very clean with sharp, but gentle, carbonation. The flavor begins with pale tripel malt, apple brandy, light vanilla, some abv and sour apples. The finish is hot, but nice. A bit of age should do wonders for this one. It is too hot now, but with some time I’m betting this will be wonderful.
bitbucket (1447), Kirkland, Washington, USA Jul 5, 2008 750, thanks SuzyGreenberg! Pours hazy apricot with a lacy white head. Aroma of alcohol, yeast, apples. Tastes like apple vodka. Dry woody finish punctuated with alcohol heat. I think this one would benefit from some time to cool down and calm down a bit. tronraner (1366), (Louis-, Sevier-, Knox-)ville, Tennessee, USA Jun 22, 2008 750 mL bottle thanks to beastiefan2k. Pours golden color with dark floaties and a fizzy white head. The aroma is very oaky with lemon, muffin, brown sugar, and just a hint of apple (but nowhere near what I expected). The flavor is spicy with some strong oak, some lemon and banana, and alcohol in the finish. Some zesty bitterness bounces around throughout. Apple is in the aftertaste, but not much of anywhere else. Decent, but honestly a little bit disappointing. TURDFERGUSON (960), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Jun 22, 2008 Bottle shared by emacgee and aubreya. Thanks yall! Always excited to try a new CL beer. Pours a hazy orange golden with no head. Nose is boozy, apples. some extra gold type hops, and some yeasty sweetness. Flavor is very similar--apple brandy really comes through strong and doesn’t mesh too well with the extra gold in my opinion. May improve with more time in the bottles or barrels. JCB (820), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 20, 2008 Bottle generously shared by emacgee - thanks, Ethan! I wasn’t the hugest fan of the Extra Gold, even though I found it to be a typically good CL offering. This one, however, was more enjoyable than I expected. As Ethan said, the alcohol was much less assertive than I feared. A beautiful pour, nice deep amber, with a very active carbonation (put it to your ears, and it’s like Rice Krispies). The aroma is a bit odd, with some booze and soapy smell in there. But the beer does grow on you, with nice sour apples and amarillo hops blending with a kind of dusty cinnamon. Pretty good. emacgee (934), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jun 20, 2008 Thanks a ton to hophead75. Pours a hazy pale peachy brew with a thin fizzy white head. The nose is sweet, alcohol evident, apple, bready, yeasty, and apple. The flavor has light brandy, alcohol, dry, apple, yeasty. The alcohol isn’t quite as bad as I thought it was going to be. Especially considering they were freshly dumped brandy barrels. I still prefer the base beer but this one grew on me over time.
