COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Batch 1 (2008) and Batch 2 (2010) of Captain Lawrence’s Extra Gold aged in apple brandy barrels. There’s nothing quite likes Mom’s apple pie…But I am willing to bet this beer is pretty darn close. An American Tripel, dry-hoped with Amarillo hops and aged in Apple Brandy barrels from one of this country’s oldest distilleries. The tropical aroma of the hops and the delicate apple aroma from the barrels are a perfect match

Bottle. Hazy yellow color with a big white head. The aroma is hoppy with notes of lemon peel, spices, yeast and mild apple hints. The flavor is sweet and spicy with plenty of citric hop notes. Yeasty and basically mostly just a hoppy tripel. Some oak and floral/fruity notes. The apples are there, but hard to pick out exactly as apples. The finish is somewhat pehnolic with mild hints of alcohol and notes of hops and ripe fruits. Medium body, effervescent and oily texture. Quite good, but the apple brandy character was really subtle.

Apple brandy alcohol aroma from the barrel is upfront. The aroma also contains a high amount of citrus fruit esters. Appearance is a cloudy yellow with an average white head. The dominant flavor from the beer is apple/brandy character from the barrel along with notes of wood and vanilla from the oak. It also has a citrus flavor from the esters and hops. The alcohol level is noticeable and boozy. The body and carbonation are medium. Overall, the beer description sounds better than it tastes. The apple brandy barrel over powers the base beer and it tastes too boozy.

Thin bright white head of fine bubbles with good carbonation. Funky apple cider aroma with some sour grapes, straw, fermenting apple skins and horse sweat. Color is a slightly hazy bright gold. Noticable alcohol presence and warming. Brew is a bit hot. More funkyness in the flavor with apple cider, butterscotch, floral hops and some dusty cereal grains. Seems like the barrels were red oak which helps to instill some of the funkyness and sourness to the brew. A high octane brew that hits hard and lets you know the alcohol is way up there. Finishes hot with lingering tartness which makes your mouth salivate for more!! A pretty damn good brew.

Pours a clear golden color and has a small white head on it. Aroma of some yeast, grass, and apple. Taste followed the nose. I enjoyed the appleflavor that the beer got from aging. I felt this was easy to drink and didn’t notice the alcohol from the 10%. It was dry throughout, but I liked that about it. Well done.

APPEARANCE - Cloudy, 2-finger head that dissipates slowly. Light colored. Good lacing. AROMA/SCENT - Hops, gruit, floral, sweet. TASTE - Hops, sweet, citrus, apple. ABV somewhat hidden. MOUTHFEEL/PALATE/TEXTURE - Good carbonation, drier than expected, light, effervescent, crisp, refreshing. VALUE - $10 for a 12 oz. glass - not that bad for a specialty beer at a restaurant. OVERALL/DRINKABILITY - Lacks the usual kick you get from Tripels. Surprisingly dry. Halfway between hard cider and an Imperial IPA.

12oz bottle pours clear gold with a finger of head. Nose is boozy spice, some apple, light grain, medicinal, vanilla. Taste is boozy spirits, some spice, grainy malt, apple, some yeast spice and fruit notes. Harsh. Finish is round mild oak, dry bready grain, some semi sweet white grape and apple. Doesn’t really mesh well for me.

On tap @ KBF 2014. Pours a hazy, golden color with a short white head. The aroma has a Belgian yeast character, sweet malt, and apples, with a subtle woody oak. The taste follows the aroma with the yeast coming through on the palate along with lots of alcohol from the apple brandy. It is a bit to sweet and boozy. Medium body, slightly syrupy, with lighter prickly carbonation.

12oz bottle, thanks to Ken. Pours a deep gold, lasting white head. Aroma is apple, brandy, booze, wood, stale hops. Flavor is sweet apple pie, brandy / bourbon. Big beer, sweet booze, pretty unique.

12oz bottle (2014) from WineWorks (Marlton). Pours a hazy golden yellow color with a finger of foamy white head. Big boozy aroma of Apple brandy, with some notes of caramel, cinnamon, and wood. Taste of rotted apples, earthy hops, grass, brandy, wood, and lots of warming alcohol burn.

Pours gold with a smallish head of white bubbles. Aroma kind of smells like an apple wine. I bit thick in mouth feel, but lots of bubbles. Flavor is very boozy with apple undertones and a sweetness up front. After taste is actually really good with a lingering apple presence. I like it.
