COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
I am a big fan of oak aged beers, as you can probably tell from yet another addition in the "Smoke from the Oak" series. And i have to tell you, it is getting harder and harder to find new & exciting barrels to age our Smoked Porter in. This one was simply dumb luck smacking me in the face as I perused the shelved at my local liquor store. Apple Brandy has been produced in this country for centuries, so why not age our full bodied Smoked Porter in freshly emptied barrels from one of America’s oldest distilleries. Straight from the Captain’s cellar to yours, we hope you enjoy.

Deep ruby/black pour. Smoky/roasty/spicy aroma, flavor of chocolate, smoke, oak and apple.

Draught at Lord Hobo, 4/6/14
Well, pretty cool that I got to try this, Cuvee Delphine and Black Berry Albert, on the downside, I missed the MOTHERFU**ING Fou Foune, Consecration, Merveilleux. Damn.
Small light tan head tops an opaque, deep brown body. Low retention.
No smoke in the nose, though you do get plenty of chocolate, oddly enough. Wouldnt be able to tell there’s any apple or brandy either. Light wood tannins, vanilla and some light tobacco...but mostly just chocolate. I guess there’s a little bit of fruitiness, and as it warms, it opens up a little, adding more barrel notes, but it’s pretty low on the aroma.
Flavor is sweet, fudgey chocolate, drying some with wood tannin and light brandy dryness. Candied cherries, light vanilla and a bit of vinousness, though it’s held at bay by the thick chocolatey maltiness. Mouthfeel is soft, supple, chewy. Carbonation is low, but what’s there still remains pretty tight. A very, very understated, somewhat muted even, beer. I get no apple, just a touch of brandy warmth/acidity and very, very little smokiness. It’s more of just a light, oily roast with just a hint of tobacco smoke. Not that there’s anything wrong with understated; in fact I usually prefer it. Unfortunately, the beer itself is just a little too fudgey-sweet. Very little porter character. Hides the abv well, at least.

Draught @MugsBK for Split thy Skull. Pours red tinged with beautiful lace. Aroma is potent fruity sweet boozy then big mod heavy smoke that lasts. Flavor follows, very sweet but balanced by the heat and spice, riding out with a bit if porter lactic ness to start then the smoke and oak takes over for a long ride out. Feel is dense, lively, tannic, very long lasting. Like it a lot more than I was expecting (no special reason why my expectations were low other than local familiarity). Intense. Too intense for normal drinking but a special one nonetheless. Not a ton of porter-ness left in it, and unusually that is not a bad thing.

Pours a roasted umber color with three fingers of tight bubbled foam. The nose has nice peat smoke mingling with boozy apple, roasted chocolate and caramel. The palate has great harmony between the boozy apple brandy character and smokey chocolate base. Really well made with great balance yet layers of flavor.

Bottle shared at Dadsgiving, big thanks to Jay for this Captain Lawrence obscurity, 24/11/13. Mid black with a good sized dirty tan head, Nose is big on roast malt bolstered by smoke, leather, ash, dark fruit, spice. Taste comprises earthy cocoa, brown sugars, dark toffee fudge, smoke. Full bodied, fine carbonation, dry smoked finale with sweet tones. Nice tackle!

My Bottom Line:
Peat smoke, roasted cereals and dark chocolate are dipped in alcohol before leading to almonds and mesquite lengths.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam sits atop the brown-hued darkness.
-That’s one impressive nose! And a delicious flavor profile too.
-The brandy barrel presence is one flavor amongst many in this complex brew.
-This is big and bold, but moreover complex.

Bottle.

Bottle that I took to Dadsgiving! Pours a deep black with a thin tan head. Still a ton of smoke on the nose, wood, a hint of apple, but I’m definitely looking for it. Medium-bodied, soft cocoa, roast, Loads of smoke comes through, but it’s super gentle and pairs up nicely with the chocolate notes. Very nice.

(2010) Une version plus tannique et charbon que les deux autres mais le chocolat est riche et le apple brandy se pose délicatement sur la mixture sucrée et fumée. Cette série est vraiment bien réussie,
