COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a truly unique brew, combining some unusual elements to create a powerful, yet flavorful brew. I brewed a similar beer to this one back in 1998, while I was home brewing out in California. Only this time around I decided to age it in bourbon barrels to add a new element to the already rich sensory profile. The combination of dark malt, elderberries and bourbon barrels makes for an interesting tasting experience. This is a sippin’ beer, so sit back by the fire and enjoy.

Clear dark red brown color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is berry, edelberry, oak, cask wood, grape, chocolate and vanilla notes, moderate to light heavy bourbon. Flavor is heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel has alcoholic notes. [20090411]

From 75 cL bottle. Pours very deep brown with two finger tall light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, slight earthy and yeasty. Flavour is malty, chocolate, bitter/sour to slight citric flavour blending with the a bourbon flavour of the alcohol. Thick alcohol mouthfeel. Strangely spicy and liqourice in the finish. I did not sense elderberries at all.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a brown shine under a lazing brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of brown sugar and prunes as well as hints of bourbon. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel and oranges and again a light touch of bourbon. The alcohol is felt on the sides of the tongue.

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of markgugs. Pours completely dark brown and almost opaque, there’s a warm, reddish glow underneath with a light brown head. Distinct and lovely aroma of bourbon and dried fruit. Rather full-bodied with plenty of sweet, roasted malt, vanilla and oak accents. The bourbon really shines all through also flashing quite some alcohol in the finish. Quite interesting. 100807

Bottled (thanks Degarth!). Deep ruby red colour, small brown head. Aroma is fruity and wooden along with some alcohol and some slight raisins. Flavour is raisins, alcohol, wooden, and quite hoppy. Quite much sweet and very strong wooden notes.

Bottled, thanks jjpm74! Very dark brown, beige creamy head. Oaky nose with an interesting touch of elderflowers. Sweet and softly malty with roasty malt and molasses. Bourbon brings flavour and warnming alcohol. The bitterness is low. Big, yet well balanced, although the sweetness is a bit much. Really good!

Bottle. Pours a dark brown almost black color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty fruity spicy elderberry aroma. Sweetish fruity spicy elderberry flavor with some weak sour hints. Has a slightly roasted malty spicy elderberry finish with some weak sour hints.

7th September 2008. Opaque black beer. Slightly creamy, very distinct fruit from the elderberries. Lots of woody tones with the bourbon in the background. A hint of toasty malt in the finish. Not bitter but slighty dry. Very complex beer.

The color is very dark, the head is medium-sized. Mild aroma of caramel and red wine. Good body strength, sweetish caramel flavor, with red wine, and finally some liquorice; the final is slightly salty. Tonight it seems a bit chaotic: I can’t appreciate the wine with the liquorice with the caramel.

Black color; creamy head. Wonderful vanilla oak aroma, alcohol, whisky. Good body strength, chocolate and caramel flavor, vanilla oak, and a light sourness from the fruits that fits together very well. The alcohol is clearly perceived. There is some liquorice in the end (and I don’t fancy that too much). Vibrating, but it’s difficult to drink too much of it.
