A collaboration with Captain Lawrence, Ithaca, and Southampton Publick House, this beer is the official beer of NY Craft Beer Week 2009. A Farmhouse Ale brewed with local honey from each of the three brewers. The beer is dry-hopped with hops from Pedersen Farms, Willamette being the predominant hop for this brew.

Sampled on tap at Captain lawrence, and from a growler. Hazy light amber/orange in color with a small/medium lasting head. Aroma of mild belgian yeast- light esters, some phenols, light to moderately grainy, light vegetal. Taste: fairly one dimensional, some phenols and esters, some vegetal hops and some light citrus as well. Malts and body are light, the honey is there alittle bit, throwing off some fruit, but overall dry. I don’t think they achieved what they were looking for on this one, but collaboration is always a good thing. Hopefully we’ll see some more efforts from these brewers.

Tap at Rattle’n’Hum. Nutty, putrid water aroma, syrupy and mushroomy. Watery body, with sweet, earthy notes, and some very weird fruits. Some juniper throws another wild card in there. Blech. Way too much going on in no particularly good ways.

Tap at Rattle ’N’ Hum: Hazy deep orange copper with a fading off white head. Lots of dry Belgian phenolics in the aroma- slightly sulfuric with a grainy Belgian amber malt presence. The body is fluffy and crisp. Dry flavor- all the honey has fermented out nicely. Some grainy Belgian amber malts precede a nondescript fruitiness. Has a dry chalky phenol presence as well. Quite simplistic and one dimensional, but no major flaws.

Cask. Golden orange with a thin head. Light aroma, belgian yeasty/spicy character with some faint tart fruity notes. The flavor has tart fruit (kind of like rhubarb), with herbal, spicy, and flowery notes. Not bad, but kind of dissapointing.

Hazy golden color with a small head. Aroma has some spice, sweetness, moss, earth and faint citrus. Flavor is sweet with a sour twang and some pine. Odd Better on cask. Much smoother texture and not as much dirty spice and bitterness.

Location: Draft at Rattle ’N’ Hum, 9/13/09

Aroma: Yeast, sour fruit, lemon, bread
Appearance: Cloudy amber color with a small head
Flavor: Sour fruit and some yeast backing, a little better then the nose
Palate: Light-medium body, smooth, little light on mouthfeel
Overall Impression: The official beer of NY Beer Week 2009 is a decent, but unspectacular beer. I have a feeling the ratings for this one will be all over the map, as it is a bit odd, but its not a bad beer at all. I like the effort, and while I wouldn’t call it a standout it certainly wasn’t a awful.

Draft. Pours a rustic amber body with an off white head. Overly grainy dry wheat notes with lemongrass, bread y notes, and a vegetation character. A hint of pear like esters and a messy bitter paper finish. Fail.

On tap at Captain Lawrence during the release of Smoke from the Oak Apple Brandy Barrel. Glad this was there as I figured since I’d be unable to get down to the city for any of NY Craft Beer Week, I’d miss it completely, so it was a welcome surprise. Pours a hazy orange amber with a medium white head. Very confusing aromas. Almost a bit skunky and cheesy with a big vegetal note, reminiscent of nori (seaweed for making sushi), and a bit of popcorn and toffee. Weird. Medium bodied and still vegetal, lightly sweet. Starts off tasting nicely but turns into a big seaweed mess. Big corn and cardboard aftertaste. Rather unpleasant, and wasn’t able to finish my sample.
