COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A collaboration with Captain Lawrence, Ithaca, and Southampton Publick House, this beer is the official beer of NY Craft Beer Week 2009. Cloudy light amber color; creamy head. Dusty, dirty water aroma, cooking herbs. Weak body, light flavor; simple Ale, the flavor reminds me of... sushi (or to better say, the flavor of the sushi rice with the rice vinegar). Low bitterness. Very strange.

Tap at Rattle N Hum. Pale amber pour with a thin white head. The nose has a bit of ginger and a lot of sweet rotted peaches. The beer seems very sweet and underattenuated. A lot of chewy sweetness. A bit of rancid yeastiness and a kind of dank earthiness as well. If none of this sounds appealing, you’re right. Tastes like hot dogs, rotten peaches and assholes. This is a trainwreck.

Growler. Pours a hazy amber with a lasting, white head. Smells of sweet malt, some honey hints. Tastes earthy and funky with some peachy hints on the finish.

Draft. Pours a rustic amber body with an off white head. Overly grainy dry wheat notes with lemongrass, bread y notes, and a vegetation character. A hint of pear like esters and a messy bitter paper finish. Fail.

In short: A dusty dirty yeasty rough golden Belgian ale. Something went wrong here.
How: Tap at Waterfront, NYC
The look: Partially cloudy dark golden body topped by a long lasting small beige head
In long: The yeasty nose has that strong dusty character with minerals that I found a little repulsive. Taste of hard water, licking an old dusty chest drawer, spiciness borderline salty, wood chips, grainy malts, honey/caramel. Overall very “rough” and dirty. Unpleasant rough mouthfeel full of minerals and with a carbonation way too aggressive. I love Captain Lawrence but this beer is problematic to say the least. Because it is from Captain Lawrence I would normally have suspected I got a bad pint (problem keg?, shit on the line, whatever) but since this beer seems to be universally disliked I guess I got what it is supposed to be. Insulting, I think the dudes at Captain Lawrence actually don’t like New-York and the full name of the beer really is Phi 7, NY3.

On tap at Captain Lawrence during the release of Smoke from the Oak Apple Brandy Barrel. Glad this was there as I figured since I’d be unable to get down to the city for any of NY Craft Beer Week, I’d miss it completely, so it was a welcome surprise. Pours a hazy orange amber with a medium white head. Very confusing aromas. Almost a bit skunky and cheesy with a big vegetal note, reminiscent of nori (seaweed for making sushi), and a bit of popcorn and toffee. Weird. Medium bodied and still vegetal, lightly sweet. Starts off tasting nicely but turns into a big seaweed mess. Big corn and cardboard aftertaste. Rather unpleasant, and wasn’t able to finish my sample.

Cask. Golden orange with a thin head. Light aroma, belgian yeasty/spicy character with some faint tart fruity notes. The flavor has tart fruit (kind of like rhubarb), with herbal, spicy, and flowery notes. Not bad, but kind of dissapointing.

Thanks to SMason on BA for the chance to try this one. Talk about far less than the sum of its parts. I was hoping that the other raters were haters, but unfortunately I have to concur that this beer is a real disappointment. Clear amber/brown pour with an abundant carbonation, it’s got a soft nose of biscuity malts and the mildest of fruits. Body is fairly thin and the sweet malts aren’t balanced by enough yeast, hops, or really much of anything. Passable session beer, but barely.

Tap at Rattle’n’Hum. Nutty, putrid water aroma, syrupy and mushroomy. Watery body, with sweet, earthy notes, and some very weird fruits. Some juniper throws another wild card in there. Blech. Way too much going on in no particularly good ways.
